It is the crux of many issues. An introduced safety system like TASS sets the benchmark going forward. It can only be replaced with something of equal or better to avoid increasing risk.
Current plan seems to be to fit ETCS to the northern WCML, which would provide TASS functionality a long with many other safety features. South of Crewe, with HS2 bypassing much of it, may revert to a 110mph railway with no tilt differentials.

I did have someone tell me that serious consideration is being given to convert the Manchester - Wilmslow - Crewe route to ETCS since the Ansaldo signaling equipment is nearing end of life.

In this case mildly annoying may lead to a load more monitoring and mildly annoyingly having to explain yourself as to why you didnt react to DAS.

Is this a hypothetical concern or something that actually happens? Not that I'd be surprised by the latter given how the railway industry seems to infantilise its staff...

It's the only stretch of line in the UK with the Ansaldo technology, so must be challenging to support economically, especially as it becomes older. If the fleet using the line isn't all suitable for ETCS yet, maybe a conventional TCB resignalling project might be considered initially, made 'ETCS ready' for the future, a standard requirement today.

Not happening, the equipment is being replaced with non Ansaldo conventional signalling.
