TASS Balise

I am struggling with this one. Has anyone got any detailed pictures of TASS (Tilt And Speed Supervision) Balises?

I have done various searches, but cannot find anything useful whatsoever.

As I understand it they are simply standard Eurobalises as the system uses the national-specific telegram code built into the ERTMS specification.
This was to enable the system to be integrated into any future ERTMS installation easily.

Why is TASS even needed? Other countries run tilting trains without such systems.

All other countries I know of have some form of continuous speed supervision for speeds over 100 mph. The ECML doesn't. The WCML does in the form of TASS.

The primary reason for TASS is to enable the trains to vary the tilt levels according to the available gauge for tilting, whereas other countries have sufficiently generous loading gauges throughout their networks to simply make a train that is profiled such that even at maximum tilt it remains within gauge at all times.

Also remember that pendolinos go out of guage when they tilt (unlike the apt). So they can't tilt at will

Can't be many of those left in place I would have thought?

I know of two still left in the wild.

But have used dozens in the past to cover up holes in the floors of spoil wagons.


You will notice that the BR APT design is built into a nice solid block of plywood, that you can ran a JCB over without worrying. Engineer friendly design at its best, the new ones you would not even want to walk over.

Are the APT transponders a more primitive version of the same technology or are they simpler?
