Tapped in with wrong card

during yesterday's tube strike I had to take the Chiltern Line. I have just been issued a new card by Lloyds bank (not because of fraud, but they are changing from Mastercard to Visa and I had not idea why) . I was worried with my phone dying so I tapped in with my Mastercard, and got a green light on the oyster card read. The train was arriving in 2 mins, when I suddenly got an email from TfL to say that the bank had blocked the authorization. I then tried with the physical card and I got a red light. I then tried with a debit card, and again red light. Out of desperation I put my phone on the reader (I had used my phone earlier to buy a coffee) and I got a green light.
I had an uneventful journey and made the return journey using my phone.
I decided to check my TfL app and I could see an unresolved journey of £10.20
I then added the new VISA card to it, and it showed my correct daily journey of £9.40

I am seriously worried that I am going to get an adverse credit rating and be branded as a fare dodger when I have never done anything like that in my life. I understand TfL blacklist people that do not pay and make a note on credit reference agency files.
I tried to resolve this in the app, but it said to wait 48 hours.

Please can anyone help how I can resolve this and prevent my credit rating from getting affected.
Thank you.

No idea where you've got the fact this will somehow affect your credit rating. TfL couldn't even do that because they are not a lender and cannot acvess your credit file. This is a common thing TfL will resolve for you. Call them on 0343 222 1234.

Bit of an explanation

Many new bank cards need to be activated by entering PIN on first use, so cannot be used for contactless on first transaction.

If it is a replacement card (and sounds like this is), the old card with different 16 digit number will usually be stopped by bank when new card becomes active.

Gates at stations only check the card is not expired or on blacklist etc, they don't connect online to the bank to check card is active, so got green light. The back office systems then checked with the bank for funds and system realised your Mastercard had been cancelled.

Your card must have been registered with TfL (otherwise they wouldn't know who to email). As it appears it registered end of journey, best thing to do is phone TfL and get them to manually sort it. Need to wait couple of days because sometimes a back office auto sweep up process will fill in failed taps one end on regular journeys. EDIT realise you have already seen wait 48 hours

If you don't phone them will just pay a maximum fare.
There is no credit file implications

Seeing as you eventually paid with your phone, I can see no reason why you could be punished / fined / prosecuted etc. They have no evidence that you travelled having tapped the card which didn't work, and indeed you did not travel using the problematic card. Having tapped in and paid for your journey, there should not be any implications from revenue protection for fare evasion - you did not travel without a valid ticket.

Thank you very much for putting my mind at ease. I will wait a couple of days and see if it has auto resolved otherwise I will call TfL.

There is no chance of any of this happening.
I have just been issued a new card by Lloyds bank (not because of fraud, but they are changing from Mastercard to Visa and I had not idea why)
Lloyds Banking Group has signed a deal with Visa to issue Visa credit cards instead of MasterCard.

As Snow1964 states above, once your replacement card arrived Lloyds will have scheduled your old card for cancellation. The letter accompanying your new card will have explained this, and will have told you that the old card should have been cut up and not used anymore. The first in-person usage of a new card needs to be chip & PIN, to verify that the card has reached the right person, so it wouldn't work for contactless. This is why you got a "red" light with the Visa card, as the card itself "knew" it wasn't able to be used for contactless yet. That will continue to happen until you make a chip & PIN transaction with that card. It can be anything including a balance check at an ATM.

Contactless transit payments are not authorised in real-time, but submitted at a later stage. This is why you got a "green" light with the old cancelled MasterCard, even though it could not be charged. Neither the card nor the gateline "knew" yet that the card was cancelled.

Apple/Google Pay is verified electronically, such as by texting you a one-time passcode or validating the card via the issuer's app, when the card is added to your wallet. This is why you got a "green" light with your phone, and the journey was charged for.

So you need to wait 2 full working days as this may resolve itself, in other words until Wednesday, then check if the amounts are showing incorrect on your card via the Lloyds app/website (not the TfL app). If they are, then call TfL on the number given above. Not message, not chat, not email. Call and explain the double charge and how it happened, and they'll refund one of the charges.

Thanks to everyone that replied. There's a lot about contactless I didn't know. If you use apple / Google or Samsung pay they create a virtual card, which is why you can sometimes get charged 2 journeys if you use your phone and physical card . Also there is a mode called transit mode, and some very clever ethical hackers have demonstrated that it is possible to drain someone's account if transit mode is enabled. You can do a YouTube search on this.

My understanding is that the hack is possible in lab conditions but almost impossible to do to a real, unsuspecting passenger

Yes, you should always stick to using the same "version" of your card on a given day. The phone and physical card are separate as far as TfL is concerned.

Because they are separate with different card numbers and all! The mobile version of your card is more secure for regular payments.
