Hi, any ideas on this one, I'm not too familiar with Tfl fares. So I'm going to from Victoria to Whitstable at the moment and had an eticket on my phone. However at Victoria I think I scanned the contactless payment part of the barrier rather than the barcode part. I won't have a tap out. How much will I get charged and is there anyway to get this refunded?

Thanks for any advice you can offer

A max fare for a Zone 1 touch-in is (up to) £9.90, which would be charged the day after travel (tomorrow).

An automatic refund may be issued a few days after that, but if not then you can create a contactless account with the card you accidentally used* and request a refund that way. Keep your e-ticket as evidence of additional paid-for travel as TfL will ask for proof before approving your request.

[* If you used a virtual card then register the physical version of it]

Didn't touch in or out

You can get a refund if you were charged a maximum fare.

Before you claim

Please wait at least 48 hours as you might receive an automatic refund:
  • Oyster - we'll automatically add it to your card the next time you touch in or out of a rail journey
  • Contactless - the refund will show on your next card statement, or we will adjust the fares charged when you next travel
If you do not get an automatic refund, you have up to 8 weeks from your journey to claim.
We will not give a refund if you have already claimed 3 maximum fare refunds in the same calendar month.

I did similar once, I’d been to football in the West Midlands, came back into Euston and absent mindedly touched the barrier with my contactless card instead of exiting with my paper ticket. I then got the tube and train home so after OSIs were invoked my journey showed as (unknown, no tap in) to (my destination). Emailed TFL with the details, they replied saying as it was the first time they would refund me, (which they did), but if it happened again they would ask for evidence of the paper ticket.
