I think it was last Wednesday when I looked out of my window and noticed a special, diesel hauled, I believe, passing on the up line between New Milton and Sway.

At the back (Weymouth) end of the train was a Battle of Britain/West Country class steam locomotive facing towards Weymouth.

I can't find any information on this train or where it was going. I've checked the railtours sites but can't seem to find anything, although I don't really know what I am looking for.

Any ideas anybody?

I am assuming the steam loco was Tangmere but am prepared to be corrected on that.

According to UK Steam Info Website, Tangmere was doing a non passenger movement on Monday 28 Nov, so may have been in your area between 1200-1400 Hrs. Perhaps that was what you saw?.

last Thursday Tangmere was on a Poole-Bristol & return, and then went down to Swanage to stable & went back to Eastleigh on Friday (DoNZ did the same this Wednesday). It may have been the ECS movement associated with that.

Thanks for the prompt reply STEVIEBOY and Schnellzug. This sound like the train I saw. My date of sighting may have been inaccurate although I am certain it wasn't as early as Monday.
