A news article in the Metro, with an alarmist and misleading headline mentions that a think tank, Institute of Economic Affairs, suggests taking out train seats and introducing a standing class of ticket which would be up to 20% cheaper.
Others such as passenger focus say it would be difficult to police. I personally wonder if that would be the case if a whole carriage had no seats. After all they are able to police first class.
Still even if they didn't make a third class travel, there should be a discussion on whether less seats should exist in trains as we need to cut costs buy provide more capacity.
South West Trains are adding more carriages to some services but can't for others, these being longer distance. So remove seats and problem resolved for a time.
