Another one that's been puzzling me is do drivers have any leeway as to when they depart a station as one instance imparticular that I've only witnessed once is a train being at Platform 2 at Gateshead and in the tunnel from Gateshead Stadium the lights from the following train were clearly visible at the signal before the station. I've yet to witness a reoccurance of this so I'm just wondering if it's down to the driver when he departs, obviously within reason, especially on the NR section.

It will be signalled, pretty normal. I remember the same when the St James to North Shields shuttles used to run

At a lot of the underground stations the starting signal at the end of the platform turns green only when the Metro is standing at the platform and ready to leave. If you sit in the front seat you'll know what I mean. Normally as soon as it is set to green, driver closes the doors and is away.

Thats not fully true, the signals turn green in the underground stations as soon as the last train that has gone went past the next red/green(or yellow) signal. The reason you see the signals on red for a while at the underground signals is because of the length between one red/green signal to the next is quite a distance compared to other parts of the system, plus coupled with the fact its the busiest part of the system so it will take a while for people to board and leave the train.

However some signals at stations only change to green once the train go past a signal box on the track and it will automatically change(Pelaw & Heworth platform 2 are good examples of this) if the line ahead is clear.

Perhaps it is just me but I normally notice the signal only going to green when the Metro is stationary on the platform at underground stations - although sometimes it changes when the Metro is coming in and sometimes is already green.
