T&W Metro Mileage

Could anyone find out how many miles it is from Sunderland to Newcastle Central Station on T & W Metro i have tried with Mileage Calculator but it just gives Error messages.

Also - when GC arrives in SUN do they use the Platforms Metro services run from??

You might not be able to find exact milage as the Metro uses metric scales (so km instead of miles). The datum point is South Gosforth control IIRC. I would think that it should be near enough the same number of miles as Sunderland - Newcastle on a Northern train as they both follow the same route as far as Gateshead Stadium. Perhaps add a mile or two for the Metro.

As for Sunderland station, it is an island platform split into 4 sections. On each side there is one section for Metro and one for national rail services. So basically yes they do share the same platform (although not at the same time), but would be given a different platform number.

Probably just walk back up the platform. Also remember that you can get Metro tickets for Northern services, so you could come back on a 142 or 156 if you wish.

Think I will give that a miss... I have to depart NCL at 1255 to go to EDB on the ECML - it was just a bit of a divert to get extra miles! Starting PBO - YRK - SUN - EDB.

Thanks anyway but the ADV tickets I have cover me on the metro as thay are from SUN to EDB via T & W M. However will be arriving SUN on a day single from YRK.

Its true, at least they are doing something about it. But I fear its just a tart up and the same old problems will exist. Would love it if the could somehow do something with Monkwearmouth Station Museum, pity its on the wrong side of the river.

None taken, personally I love the smell of diesel when I get into that station I hope you didnt have to get on one of those crappy metros.

Well Mr Spoony, Sunderland Station in due course, not before time, you will see the Grand Central HST sets fitted with MTU power units in place of the truly, truly awful smoking, chuffing, leaking Valenta.
Those as you say, crappy Metro's are being taken well and proper in hand under DB Regio where they are going to shortly commence a "proper" professional internal and external body refurb and new livery which to my knowledge is that to be similar to the refurbed GNE Scania Solars used on the Washington-Easington Lane services.
So those distinct improvements along with the Sunderland Station makeover, things should be better for your travelling enjoyment in your manor.
Quality remains presently however with Northern's superb 142's providing a good service on the Durham Coast line.

To an extent I would agree with you. Provides a fast frequent service, however I find the seats extremely uncomfortable. But perhaps my view is skewed somewhat by travelling 40 minutes each way between Stadium of Light and Regent Centre every day. Its not so bad during peak times but if you travel say after 7.30pm especially on the South Shields line some of the clientèle leave a lot to be desired

Yes, I agree with you regards your 40min travelling time between the S.o.L and Regent Centre....it must be tedious!! However, its still faster than the typical rush hour journey if you used the car, am I correct?
The Metrocar seats I have found however rather comfortable for a Light Rail Unit. I can imagine some negative comments if DB Regio decided on a plastic seat as seen on many LRV's worldwide. Whenever I have needed to travel between Newcastle and Sunderland, I use Northern Rail. I much prefer the Pacer to a Metrocar, or sometimes, the occasional 156, if lucky.

Agree on all points. Unfortunately where I work involves a 10 minute bus journey from Regent Centre, not that thats metros fault mind but it means an hours commute.

When I drove it, it took about 50 minutes, but if Im honest I prefer public transport as travelling in stop start traffic through the Tyne Tunnel was actually begining to affect my back due to the constant up down of my clutch foot. Plus it means I save about £75 a month. Means I can have a trip to Arsenal tomorrow

Ohh Sunderland AFC!! They have taken years off me!!! Along with the rest of their fans!! I hoped for better things this season, alas not. I really hope that they don't trade places with a certain team in the Championship in May and I don't mean the Smoggies. There was some pictures when Project Orpheus came out about what future Metros would look like, and they were basically trams. What I would like to see is a more modern version of the current stock, with better seats and interiors, but still with the same overall "Metro" look to it.

As for Sunderland, would be a shame if we didn't get the derbies next season, but not that much of a shame!
