All of the Tyne and Wear Metro stations, as well as many on the national network don't use a manual gate, so the wide gate is where people with such requirements will always go.

All Tyne & Wear Metro stations with gatelines do have a manual gate too. Airport and St James have multiple manual gates.

When I lived in the area, most of the scallies just climbed over the fence at North Shields rather than through the gateline.

Well yes, I can remember finishing up there for the day once and the local kids, having assumed the gates were still on, proceeded to get off a coast-bound service, scatter all over the tracks and jump the fence.

I'm also aware of at least one incident where someone jumped the fence on the coast-bound side and didn't live to tell the tale, shall we say.

An almost comical security operation at the Wearside end this evening, which is apparently nightly and because of serious problems with kids on the South Hylton to Sunderland section. Seems to be a group of security staff who roam backwards and forwards.

If you don't use the manual gate at Monument when a hundred schoolkids come up with bus-issued day tickets, you've quickly got a crowd control problem.

The only ones that barely ever get used are St James (designed to be used with the standalone smartcard readers during matchday crowds and thats essentially it) and Airport (clearly designed for lots and lots of passengers with luggage).

Staff will use their judgement on when using it is appropriate - the gates aren't just there to fill a gap.

Unfortunately this thread has become a bit problematic for the forum staff as some of the rhetoric being used to describe groups of individuals is causing offence (whether intentionally or not).
