No reason for a swipe/RFID card to fail. If in doubt, simply back it up with a PIN code option.

The code/accepted card list would be changeable over-the-air, most likely with a small embedded SIM on the train that allows the train to be in two-way data communication, almost certainly useful for other things too. Unless there's already some form of data communication on existing trains that can be used instead? I guess any train with onboard Internet is already sorted.

Oh please no! Yet another electronic system to go wrong all the time. I can see it now. "We're sorry to announce this train has been cancelled because the driver can't get into his cab".

I see no reason for such a simple, cheap, solution to go wrong (not as cheap as a simple key lock, but hardly expensive enough to bring the railway to its knees). A swipe/RFID card with PIN-pad has no reason to break as long as you install one that is quite rugged and durable and fully IP-whatever compliant.

But, I guess I can see them fitting some system akin to what you might have in your own home and will break after 12 hours of going into service!!

The majority of the general public do not carry such keys around with them, and any enthusiasts who carry them around can give no reasonable explanation as to WHY they should need them, unless they use them to access areas they should not.

Interference with a train or entering a place which is out of bounds is a Criminal Offence.

There is a little that can be done to override or bring into use any systems on modern stock with a T-Key, and even on older stock a degree of greater knowledge is required than would normally be known to Joe Public.

In the event of anyone acting suspiciously then they will be searched and if a T-Key is found, and they are not staff, then a number of probing questions will quickly follow in these security conscious times.

I would suggest that any non-staff walking around with T-Keys is simply throwing the dice and one day the numbers will come out wrong.

These are issued to railstaff only i have has my kit bag stolen twice by someone with a T key. i raised a complaint with ebay with regards to the sale of these stating that the keys were being used by unauthorised persons to gain access to unauthorised areas especially in this current climate and they removed them from sale with immediate effect.

Just we're all on about security. It's a slightly more pressing issue if he's carrying a ticket machine and a day's worth of takings as opposed to a sandwich and a newspaper
