Sydney Metro 1 extension has opened between Chatswood and Sydenham and is the first new train line in the city centre since the Bondi Junction line opened. The stock has extra Indian Built driverless trains with a new depot at Sydenham. The Bankstown line will shut in a few weeks time for conversion to Metro standards. The line has been renumbered M1 and renamed the Northwest and Bankstown line.

Good article here on the ABC web site:
It's the transport project that's expected to reshape the future of how Sydneysiders move about their city.
And riding the new Sydney Metro City line from Sydenham to Chatswood definitely feels a bit like something from a science fiction movie.
Rocketing under Sydney Harbour at 100 kilometres per hour, you can peer through the front window of the driverless train to see lights streaking past as you travel through twin tunnels up to 40 metres below the surface of the water.

It's the first line to go under the harbour rather than over it.
The views won't be so good, though.
The trains are driverless Alstom Metropolis sets.

More detailed piece on the Metro system project here:
The Sydney Metro is a fully automated rapid transit system in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is currently serviced by the Metro North West & Bankstown Line, running between Tallawong and Sydenham and consisting of 21 stations on 52 km (32.3 mi) of twin tracks, mostly underground. The first stage of the line opened on 26 May 2019, running between Tallawong and Chatswood. This line was extended from Chatswood to Sydenham on 19 August 2024 as part of the first stage of the City & Southwest project.[9] The second stage of the project will then further extend this line to Bankstown as part of a partial conversion of the existing Bankstown Line with a scheduled completion in 2025

The Metro will also eventually link into the new Sydney airport being built to the west.

That Metro line is supposed to open in 2026: it will be short, commencing at St Marys where I assume passengers bound for anywhere else will have to change to a Sydney Trains 'normal' service.

That's not true. It may link to a connecting train at Tallawong if the St Marys train gets extended. The M1 and M2 with have different stock and different voltages. Pretty sure the M2 stock won't be Indian Built either.

So there will be a more direct (mainline) link from the CBD to the new airport?

St marys (with spelling mistake) to Central is 48 minutes by T1. the bmt will stop at St Marys from 2026 with the Korean D Stock if they ever get allowed into service should be about to do St Marys to central in 44 minutes I'd say

In the first 5 days the new metro line has carried over 1 million passengers.
A great deal has been made of the train speed; however:
The metro running time from Chatswood to Central is 30 minutes; travel by the existing service stopping at all stations is 34 minutes. The 4 minutes saving is lost on the station escalators.

The Wester Sydney Airport (WSA) has a different service voltage (25kva ac) and the cars have a larger carriage profile. They will be incompatible with existing metro lines. The WSA line is isolated except for a passenger interchange at St Marys. A large number of Sydney railfans believe that it will be a very expensive white elephant. From wherever in the metropolis a passenger is coming from/to it will always be a longer journey time that using the bus services on the toll free motorways being built. The trains are planned to be 4 cars.

Even as a Resident of Penrith the area St marys is in. I doubt I'll use it to the airport as most planes I'll want depart from Mascot and doubt I'll use the train as it should have gone to Penrith instead of St Marys. It's a typical Liberal bodge job when it comes to infrastructure.

In all seriousness if the best airlines they have is Qantas and Turkish Airlines I'll go 1 hour out of my way via T1/BMT and use better airlines

Where as the 790 bus and 772 sound quite usable with very little infrastructure work other than a couple of bus stops on Northern Rd.

You are not the first resident of Penrith who has told me that. If locals will not use it then nobody will.

Even the 790 should probably serve Kingswood station and Western Uni but it's a Nsw Labor Government isea so will probably be useless
