Hi All

I need to get from Sydenham to Guildford by 10am both tomorrow and Friday prior to returning at 11am ish to Sydenham. I have a tfl Freedom card for London but that won't help me for the journey there of course.

I also have an unused interrail day left over from a recent trip back from Austria, valid in my home country of the UK but not sure if I need to be able to justify my journey within the UK...

Any thoughts on the cheapest way for me to do these trips please?

Thanks in anticipation!

There is a 479 bus at 0840 from Epsom to Guildford arriving at 0948.

Sydenham to Epsom is a straightforward train journey changing at West Croydon. £5.30 peak single on Oyster.

If time in the morning is a bit more critical, but the journey home can be slower, the 'not via London' fare for Sydenham to Guildford is £13.90 single to go all the way there by train via Epsom (or Crystal Palace / Clapham Junction, or Norwood Junction / Redhill).

On the return you could take the 715 bus from Guildford to Kingston and then use the Freedom Pass on the train from there back to Sydenham.

Reliability is an issue with the 479, had a look & according to bus times the 08.40 today's service actually departed at 08.56, checked for yesterday & Monday's service, & it they still departed 10 to 15 minutes late, so it'll be squeaky bum time if you have to be in Guildford for exactly 10am using the 479 at 08.40, but you could be fine if you're allowed a few minutes leeway.

Might be easier to change at Norwood Junction rather than West Croydon - same or cross platform interchange at Norwood

Through trains from Norwood Junction beyond West Croydon only runs twice per hour compared to 4 trains per hour at West Croydon, so you need to decide if the convenience is worth the extra wait expected.

That's a fair point, obviously changing at Sutton as well. If you know the Epsom train has left London Bridge and is on its way, I'd probably get off at Norwood!

Don't rely on GWR at all this week. Many trains cancelled due to 'more trains than usual needing repairs'.
