SWT Station Assistant

Hi All,


First post by me so hello to all of you. I recently applied for a station assistant role with SWT and so far I have completed and past the tests and now have the dreaded interview.

My question really is what are the sort of things do they mark heavily on...someone told me health and safety questions are the ones they really look for and if you dont answer good on these your fail no matter how well the rest of the interview went??


I come from the Railway Industry anyway although only a small part of my role involved customer service that was manily when I used to work onboard or on the platform for overtime.

But I get really nervous in interviews and sometimes even the most basic questions I could mess up.

Anyway any help and tips would be most welcome as I have been unemployed almost 2 years now since leaving my last railway job and want this one badly.

You can expect to get questions such as 'tell us about a time you had to show good customer service' etc etc.

They will really be looking for examples of good communication, teamwork, ability to prioritise, ability to keep calm under stressful situations, ability to prioritise safety, ability to turn a bad situation into a good one.

That list is only potential questions, they may ask other things but think about what the job entails and what circumstances might happen and what you would do in those circumstances. Don't forget also to ensure you have read up about SWT, how many stations, how many employees, what geographical area do they cover, name of the MD, brief history of the company etc etc.

Are you able to tell us where you are applying for and what your previous railway experience is as that will help give you the best answers?

Yeh I worked in Kings Cross for GNER I also worked for them under National Express for a bit just before it got took over by the Government and left with my redundancy

I started off working in catering control stock chcking and making sure everything from Rail Gourmet were upto GNER standards issuing KPIs also. The role them moved more admin and dealing with the EPOS machines where we would also upload/downlaod the data files and also repair or send off.

I tried to branch out when I could and was able to work on the platform and also onboard trolly for more experience.....not for a long period though but I got some expxerience.

I am applying for Wimbledon Station Assistant, passed the tests and now have interview

I got the job anyway, so well happy with that. Since I left GNER its been hard to get back on the railways, I thought my experience would count for everything but it doesnt really count for much if you dont do well in the interviews.

Anyway job not perfect and I am earning a bit less than I did at kings cross but at my age and family cant be fussy..at least I can look and try and move up after working in this role for a bit.

It is a good job to start with, there is plenty of better jobs to apply for once you have some experience.
