Hi Folks, don't know if anyone can help but I'm after these two announcments (latest celia on train version please) :-

1) - Welcome aboard.. Service to x and y (eg. Alton/basingstoke) which plays when train would devide on route (says customers for.... travel etc)

2) the messages it plays when it approaches the station it devides at

Would be grateful of any recordings as these are the only two messages that I am now missing, have the attach at next station but not the above two!

Thanks in anticipation:)

I use the 22:37 off Waterloo every Sunday on my way home from work so if I remember then I shall try and sort something out for ya (unless of course someone beats me to it!) :)

Have they sorted out the problems with 450/444 combos yet?
On the Portsmouth line at Fratton if the 450 is on the London End only the 450s doors open because the back coach of the 444 is off the platform.
This would be okay if the automated announcement started in time but because Fratton is so soon after Portsmouth and SS. it only really gets to the important bit just as the train reaches Fratton. I've seen Toddler trucks, bikes and biddies shopping trolleys trying at the last minute to get five coaches forward. Just as the panic sets in the auto announcer starts to repeatedly announce move forward to alight, its really quite funny!

Thanks coxster, would be good if ya could!

Re the 444/450 combos, fratton is not cleared for 9 car so one asumes the guard would lock the 5car out using the SDL switch from the front cab of the 444, locks the whole set out then. Not very good practice on the guards part if it happens on a regualr basis! If PIS is not programmed for this combination then it wont announce that this will happen. I no there was a manual announcement facility for this, which could be the cause of the confusing announcements as it would play what it had first and the other announcements would sit in a que until loaded. Not sure if this facility was continued when they upgraded() to celia.

The guard can hardly be held responsible for what stock is allocated to a particular service - whether booked or not.

Yeah that would explain what happens next....
Train arrives at Havant, oudles of platform.
Doors wont open in 444.
No announcements, 2 minutes pass, passenger operates emergency door open mechanism.
Passengers realise you can get out the door in another coach and start stampede. Staff turn up but cant stop stampede to close door again. Train departs 15 late. Following 5 trains shown on PIS as expected at 1 minute intervals!

Re my last post - was referring to the fact that if PIS is not functioning correctly, or train is misformed so that it will disrupt the PIS or cause confusion, then the guard should make appropriate manual announcements by over-riding the PIS. Part of the local instructions for use of announcements if i'm not mistaken!

Amazing i saw this.

Last night my wife and kids came back from the Watercress Line and the rear carriages never opened at Clapham Junction. They had to rush through to the front section. She said to the guard that thre had been no announcements and he said I did make one ... she said well funny how no one else that just got off heard them either ... maybe this is a comms problem? If so ... isn't this a danger ? And if the announcements are not being made or heard will people be fined for being at Waterlook with a Not London ticket ?

Interesting thought.

Just to add ... Why when he came through did he notmentuion that the door in the carridge she was in wouldn't open?

Ah good old Clapham Junction platform 7 which cannot take 10 coaches. If I'm completely honest I think the fact the Desiro doesn't have car lockouts (like Electrostars do) but instead unit lockouts is their biggest failing.

What you mention, however, is very odd. Were there automated announcements made throughout the journey upto Clapham? Another problem I notice on the Desiro is that guards who make announcements sometimes do not do so loudly enough. With all the pointwork in the Clapham area that is a recipe for disaster.

The reason the guard wouldn't have said anything (I assume) is that he was relying on you to hear the announcement(s) on approach to Clapham and move forward then. Thinking about it even more, the information to move forward should also have been on the scrolling display on approach to CLJ - was this working?

Then the issue of a 'Not London' ticket at Waterloo in such circumstances. I think if you explained the issue to staff (was in rear coach... no announcement to move forward... missed stop as a result) AND took the first train back to Clapham I'm sure they wouldn't really have too much of a problem with it. If they do excess your ticket, however, then a letter including details of the service you took with no announcement, and a photocopy of your tickets should result in a refund.

You may find that he may have made an announcement but if "PA to Unit" is selected by mistake without the guard realising it then it would indeed have only come out in the one car.... This is a facility that is available on the desiros but not on 455s as far as I am aware as it wasn't built into the setup when they were installed (Controlled through TMS on a desiro).

For a while, Desiros had a different system of announcing short platforms. Instead of Celia randomly piping up with "Passengers leaving the train here please move forward from this part of the train due to the short platform at this station" which would often play for Clapham as you passed Brookwood (on a non Woking stopper), the announcement was "If you require the next station New Milton please move forward from this part of the train due to the short platform at this station."

Does anyone know why the latter system was only heard for a short while, as it seems so much more informative.

Software u[grades i'm affraid! Probably happend when they had a timetable change and updated the database. Either that or the guards forget to do a manual short platform message. Not sure if the message picks up the station or not as its played through. More than likely removed from the database though.

Could it possibly be that there are so many announcements on the railways these days, many of which contain pointless information, people tend to tune out announcements in their brain? I know I do!

ahh the good old SDO or Selective Door Opperation problems this is something that gets drummed into us alot as guards at SWT, what they teach us to do now i'm not sure if all guards do this but its what we are told we should do is when you start off on your train you are supposed to announce the stations with short platforms and where you will need to be to get off at these stations for instance i took the first train of the day from woking to alton the other day which is a 12 car 450 and on that run we have SDO's at Ash vale, Bentley and Alton so what i do is after leaving woking i announce that "if passengers wish to leave the train at Ash vale or alton they will only be able to do so from the front 8 coaches of this 12 car train due to short platforms at these stations and passengers for bentley will only be able to leave the train from the front 4 coaches due to short platform at this station" i make this announcement to the whole train and add to the end, "if you are unsure of you position on the train i will be walking through the train during the journey please ask me as i pass through you carriage". After leaving brookwood i get the the place to do the SDO for ash vale where i then make a manual announcement to the rear 4 coaches only sayin "any passengers for ash vale the next station on this service you will only be able to leave the train from the front 8 coaches due to short platforms at this station" then i add "if you can hear this announcement you are in the wrong part of the train please move forward past the position at where the guard is standing" i then turn the SDO switch and stand in the rear 4 near the cab and wait to see if anyone moves up and to see if the PIS then makes the auto announcement then just after fox hills tunnel i turn the SDO switch off and then back on again so that the PIS makes another auto anouncement. then for Bentley i start making the announcements after leaving Farnham and then for alton i start making the announcements after leaving bentley to give passengers enough time to move down the train if needed.

this is what we are told we are to do if we have to perform any SDO's or LDO's but i'm not sure if all guards do this as we keep reciving breifs/bullitings stating that guards are not performing SDO's properly.

sometime the Auto annoucements are just "passengers leaving the train here please move forward from this part of the train due to the short platform at this station" but recently the announcements have changed to say thigns like passengers for the next station isleworth please move forward from this part of the train due to the short platform at this station" but it doesn't come up all the time only on some days or workings and no one knows why, i think it has been put in with some kind of system update because they have added a auto announcement that can be selected from the PIS control pannels in the cabs and guards office for attachments that you can activeate when trains are due to attach at places like waterloo which passengers seem to listen to more that when i announce the attachment manually for some reason i don't see why tho.

And the PIS volume is not controlled by the Guards and its can vary alot per coach its all down the the setup by the fitters and does get annoying sometimes, with the desiros the gurads office and the main place to work the train is in the passenger area so when you make announcements you can tell how loud or quiet the system is and you can make adjustments to your announcements as required but with the 455's and 458's you can't hear them when you are in the cabs where most guards work the trains from but its not as important because the 455's don't have SDO and the 458's you have to move all the passenges out of the rear unit before you are allowed to activeate the SDO swtich.
