SWT On-Train Announcements

Anyone travelling on SWT's 458 fleet will notice the guard has nearly finished his/her announcement before it's audible. Is this because there is a delay from them pushing the button to when the intercom is turned on? Is this a training issue? Are guards informed of the delay, but just don't care, or is it a fault on some of the stock?

During normal service, this doesn't actually matter because the phrase "We are now arriving at Feltham" turns into simply: "Feltham"... which is just as helpful, I guess. However, during a delay or disruption it is rather annoying hearing: "...**silence** and I will let you know of any further developments".

I've already mentioned this to a few guards but they don't seem to react well and just repeat the announcement to me and not over the PA.

From the audio-tech point of view, this is an issue with the majority of PA systems, though some are worse than others. As I keep telling people when recording (audio or video), or using microphone systems, switch on a second or so before speaking. It's fairly common, especially the less mechanical and the more electronic a system is. I think that perhaps user-education is required here to the guards!

If you can't hear any of the announcements ....... well, I think many would regard that as an improvement.

Those I agree with, they are a little over the top and too regular ( every station :roll: ), but when it's actually human spoken information you need to know, such as "We're gonna be here a while..." then I can see the point.
