What problem does 8 on top of 5 cause? Doe sit block access to other platforms?
It's just about 40m of train that isn't supposed to be there. 444 @ 115m + gap + 8.450 @ 160m, so say 280m.

Definitely an 'issue', and as can be seen there is a crossover within a couple of coach lengths of P14/15 - if those points have been set reverse and the route cannot be set normal because there's a train still sitting in the track section then the foul up can extend back further into the throat affecting a number of different platforms.

electricity supply problem between Strawberry Hill and Teddington. Line blocked towards Kingston

There was also a line side fire that blocked the line just as the Kingston line branches off from the Windsor lines outside Twickenham. The emergency services were in attendances as we passed on the 16:58 Waterloo - Windsor service.

Edit Thinking about it the fire may have caused the electicity problems or the electricity problems could have resulted in the fire.

There's a restriction on p15 at Waterloo that forbids the attachment or detachment of 12 car 450s due to to the platform length, 5+8 would be around 35 yards off the end of the platform and is obviously not permitted. The signaller would be at fault as the driver would not be aware on receiving the permissive signal that it was 8 rather than 4 already in the platform.

It was a bad evening peak for SWT. I felt sorry for their staff and the NW staff as well at Waterloo fielding questions and frustrations. I do think SWT did not help themselves by not clearly explaining via the web/twitter, etc. that the various issues meant in effect long delays to all services at WAT and crew displacements etc.

I only have a short hop on the suburban lines, but between arriving at and departing from Waterloo a good 30 to 40 minutes went by. Crew was obviously the biggest issue for the services, but I do think they could be clearer in ensuring it is announced which train on P1-4 should go first once crew is allocated in such circumstances. That would also clear crowds more quickly for the inner suburban destinations with multiple options.

On the whole I found most people were understanding if a little in the dark as to the problems. There is always one though and I have to give credit to the driver of our train who carefully ignored an unjustified and misdirected rant from one person on the platform when he arrived to open up and get us away.

Announcing which Suburban service was going first was something they did get the hang of later in the evening. They were clearly announcing when a train had crew and was likely to leave soon, and where possible where announcing which one would be first.

I noticed on the Monday that Twitter staff were not answering questions. I assume they were busy doing something related to ensuring as many trains ran as possible.

I wonder why they could not get the hang of announcing such crew and trains earlier?

Was it due to so much going on that it's hard to know where to start.

I'm almost certain that it would not sit inside the starting signal and thus cause a blockage. If so, it wouldn't allow the adjacent platform's signal to be cleared.
Thanks for replies.

Yes Twitter staff are great normally, but understandably when they are facing a barrage of questions and there are bigger issues they tend to stop replying to individual tweets and send out general messages/links to info.

Interesting re the announcements later on, I was there after 8pm (left on 2D63 at 20:50 from P1 in the end). We did not have announcements at least on the platforms themselves, which would have helped as we were directed to P1 as the next departure at around 20:20 from memory and of course after that a train that was empty then got crew and left from P3. Still these things happen

I was unlucky enough to be needing to get from Fareham to Southampton Airport yesterday afternoon. I arrived at FRM a bit after 4pm to find nothing running towards Southampton until after 5pm. I considered taking a delayed Southern service, which would have required changing at Eastleigh, but decided against it since the state of services from Eastleigh to SOA seemed unclear. I ended up taking a delayed GWR service to SOU, leaving FRM at 17:05. Unfortunately this was old stock with no air con, but a nice young man did pass through the train handing out free bottles of Buxton spring water, which was appreciated.

On arriving at SOU the next train to SOA turned out to be a delayed, and tiny, two-car SWT unit which I chose not to cram in to. Not too long after that an only-slightly-delayed SWT Waterloo service turned up, and I settled down in its quiet coach only to find myself sat behind a loud* young American woman who had been nattering on her phone as she boarded the train, and continued to do so despite plonking herself down in the quiet coach. Apparently obvious to the disapproving stares and suppressed tutting of her fellow passengers, she proceeded to explain to her telephonic interlocutor that the train "sucked" - apparently because, despite being comfortable, not crowded, and pleasantly cool on a boiling hot day, it had the temerity to have lost all of ten minutes as it negotiated its way through the surrounding turmoil, and then compounded this by passing through tunnels which of course interrupted her critically important f*ckw*tted inanities. Ironically, at one point she launched in to a protracted discourse about how rational and reasonable it was that she rarely took much notice of what other people thought. I ended up rather sadistically enjoying her increasing frustration at having her pointless and antisocial conversation repeatedly disrupted. I must be a bad person.

The thing that I found really frustrating was the total absence of announcements as to what was going on, when services were actually likely to turn up etc - and the furtive reluctance of any of the hi-vis-clad personnel to engage with passengers. Not on the trains: for all that the situation was clearly quite a mess, I found the station signs and announcements adequately informative, and the staff very helpful. No, this was at the airport, where the departure screens had frozen at about five thirty, and no-one seemed able or willing to explain why I was still waiting in the departure lounge at 20:35 for a flight scheduled to depart at 20:30. (I also got pulled aside at the security check, but that was my own fault: I had forgotten about the free bottle of water, which I had tucked away unfinished in my rucksack and put through the scanner!)

When my flight did eventually turn up, I noticed that the aircraft bore the slogan: "Faster than road or rail". I actually got home around 11pm. Google Maps says you can drive from Fareham to Edinburgh in six and a half hours. Hmm...

* One of those people who seems never to have grasped the fundamental idea of the telephone as a medium for communication: the other person may be a long way away but you don't have to shout.

I too a couple at ground level. Wonder if we were in those too. Below is one of them.

I quite enjoy photographing crowds beside trains. It highlights how popular they are.

May be one day I'll try it for the experience, probably without a case though.

Not on screen, but that looks to be close to where I was standing (near to the large cabinet on the platform).

Which one are you?

If I didn't know where I was standing, I wouldn't be able to tell it was me. Just in front of the cabinet/building..

It would appear that on this occasion the fault did not lie with the signaller, from what I know.

Is this supposed to be phonetic alphabet speak? If so, why de-value the whole point of the system (which is supreme clarity) by; a) mis-spelling the words (One Whiskey), and, b) using it here when alternatives would be far more appropriate for a general audience (such as 'down fast', etc). Nothing personal (and conscious of a 'rant-alert'!), but jargon often doesn't work on wide-ranging forums like this.

Well, after that I still don't know what 1 whiskey means, and it's a term I've never heard before, but I absolutely agree in wishing people wouldn't use jargon that's so much of an insider thing that almost no-one else will know what they're going on about.

We travelled from Overton to Waterloo on the 17.20 yesterday. Twelve minutes late at Overton, did well till held up outside Woking and then diverted to slow platform (not sure of its number), and from just west of Wimbledon crawled from signal to signal taking about one hour 40 minutes for the whole journey. The guard did his best to apologise, but there's not much you can say in the circumstances and in reality the situation was "we'll get there when we get there".

Coming back, the 22.20 didn't reach Waterloo till 22.18 but departed at 22.25, which was a pretty smart turn round.

1W's are the headcode for Weymouth route, mostly Waterloo - Weymouth (semi-)fast services.

Returning briefly to the diversionary topic about how much time to allow for delays on the way to airports. I have been travelling short-haul to Europe about 2-3 times a month for the last six years. Nearly all from Heathrow, and every trip there was by public transport. My itineraries always tell me that minimum check in time is 2 hours. I soon realised that was adding to the tedium of airport departure lounges, so always now aim to get to Heathrow 1.5 hours before departure. Only three times over the years have I needed all that time, and at least two were due to the horribly unreliable National Express Railair link from Woking (which I now avoid). I have never missed a flight. For smaller airports in the UK and Europe I allow just 1 hour. I always go hand-baggage only, but it's amazing how much you can get in one of those cases that fits the overhead lockers. Just watch regular travellers on EasyJet, where hold bag charges apply!

Apologies, I'd have thought it would have been reasonably well understood, but apparently not. In future I'll refrain.

This was the 19th?

I didn't think SN were running any services at all via Eastleigh because of the reduced timetable, but if you were ever to catch this train again it would normally be a through service to Southampton via Eastleigh and the airport. But on weekdays it only runs a couple of times a day so it isn't really worth planning for.

The fastest normal routes from Fareham to Southampton Airport are to get the xx28 Waterloo (SWT) train from Fareham to Eastleigh (destination Waterloo) changing onto a Poole or Brockenhurst at xx00, or the xx47 Southampton Central (Southern service) thence XC xx16 to Parkway.
They take almost exactly the same sort of time, 35 or 36 mins overall.

In hindsight you could have caught the SWT xx28 to Eastleigh that departed about 10 mins late. The down train to Brockenhurst was also late, but would still have got you to the airport sooner than what you eventually caught.

In extremis, the airport is much closer to Eastleigh station than Southampton Central, and if the whole timetable is in ruins its probably walkable, or at least bus or cab...

I'm confused by these times. Are you saying that the 2220 was two minutes early at Waterloo? If so, the turn-round was more relaxed than scheduled.

I'm not sure I get what you mean here.Do you expect the driver to run up the other end to get the train out on time?

It's not really possible and certainly not advisable.Apologies if I've misunderstood.

The 2220 departure from Waterloo didn't arrive until 2218, I believe is what was meant, giving only two minutes to turn it around on-time.

My apologies. The train from Exeter, which would form the 22.20 from Waterloo to Salisbury, should have arrived at Waterloo at 22.04 but did not get there till 22.18. It departed only five minutes late at 22.25. I thought that was good work by the staff concerned.

Looked like the points/signalling failed around Basingstoke earlier this evening (although looking at RTT seems it's back to order)

Not been the best week for the Basingstoke area.

Points went out for a short while on platforms 1 and 2 again (around an hour I think?) before they resolved it. Nowhere near as bad as Tuesday.

You do now!

It's also a 25ml measure of a Scottish, Irish or Welsh distilled spirit, best served with an ice cube or few drops of water.
