Oh no mate I'm sorry to hear that :(

Mind you, in 6 months I might come with you to try and become a guard too, just starting a customer service role with SWT so 6 months before I can apply for something else!

It means 6 more months of grief from my current job, I presume I can apply for other TOC's during the 6 months?

Yes of course you can, SWT don't disclose your results to anyone else so you are free to apply to whoever you wish.

Sorry to hear you aren't enjoying your current job, what are you doing atm? I come from a Retail background and got fed up/wanted to try something different :D

I also failed this test although for a different reason (being too confident and overestimating how much concentration the test demands)

I have passed my 6 month gap and reapplied because the same position came up again. I have not made it through to the assessment sadly. The email says this may be because I did not meet the required standard (although surely in this climate many who do will not make it?) or because I live too far away.

I haven't let this deter me. Perhaps they think I have an unfair advantage given the short time lapse.

I applied many times the first time to all manner of positions and finally got offered the assessment. I guess it is down to perseverance

For the conductor it is two attempts across the TOCs though.

What if a franchise changes will your results be kept on hold if you applied for a position with the new franchisee?

Regarding the Concentration test I thought so long as I chose only the correct symbols etc that would be fine so worked very quickly not understanding any missed symbols etc would also count as a mistake. Basically lack of preparation and I did not wear a suit/tie just a formal shirt and cardigan with black trousers and shoes. I put this down to being fresh out of uni and I had very few interviews before (two) whereas now I have a demanding job and am far more work focused and alert to these important matters.

30 common, I do hope you have a relaxing 2 weeks holiday, maybe we'll see each other when we apply for Guard in around 6 months time! :D

ml, I'm also sorry to hear you failed one of the tests, it does sound rather hard! Do you have any advice to give for someone like me who hasn't done or seen the test?!

Yes.

Becomes quite tricky too, I'd recommend would-be candidates to try practising this sort of thing.

Starts easy enough, but ends up with decimals, fractions with different denominators, a mixture of both... You get so out of practice doing mental arithmetic thanks to calculators...

Are you at the lash mate? I didnt do any of the above for my Guards job. Sounds like a loady pash to me.

I have the practise material I can email you but not sure if allowed.

The test is easy but you have to understand you must cross the pattern etc everytime it comes up... you are not marked on how many you cross but how accurate you were with those crossed in the time given meaning it is not about how many but the accuracy of detecting the chosen pattern each time it appears and not failing to cross it off. This is crucial and is why I failed.

On the surface the test is easy but dig a little deeper and it can be challenging. Well worth practising the tests and I think the How2become a Trasin Driver guide has some useful sample tests.

The comprehension test is very rudimentary IMO I did not get any further but the ticket selling is using basic GCSE C grade maths or even under that level and a sheet shows the percentage reductions for you (at least on my practise material it did)

Hmm when you say that the pattern appears, do you mean on the test paper or on a screen or something?

Don't worry about sending it to me, I'm sure practice material will get sent out if I apply and get through to the assessement, I just wanted an idea of what kinda stuff they make you do in the assessments. :)

I'm really sorry to hear that, but think positively, you know why you got it wrong and you know you made a basic yet fundamental error, I see no reason why you couldn't be successful next time round.;)

Keep trying, I wasted fifteen years of my life thinking 'I'll never make it as a guard' and yet here I am doing that very job.
