SWT - Gateline Role

passed all assessments and interviews with SWT, however received letters informing me all PT positions I had applied for had now gone, was then called and told they were so impressed with my assessments and interviews that they would like to offer me a FT position instead!! it's only on gateline but it's a start.

Just wondering what the shift paterns are like? and how many days you are rostered to work per week and if you have to work every weekend and if you get any long weekends on the rota??

Well done. Sounds like the usual HR left & right hands. Its a foot in the door and after 6 months you can apply for other positions.

Hello Supersaver, congrats on the job offer!

I work on the Gateline at Clapham Junction for SWT so I may be able to help a little.

The main thing I want to emphasize is that every station has its own Roster for Gateline and therefore yours may vary from mine.

Here is my typical 3 week Roster (Mon-Sun):

Early Early Early Early RD RD RD--> leads back to 1st line

Early shifts start at 06:30 and finish either 14:30 or 15:00 except Sundays when we work 08:00-14:45

Late shifts start 14:30 Mon-Thurs and finish 22:30, Fri and Sat start 15:00-23:30 and Sunday 14:45-21:00

So the upshot is that I only get 1 in 3 weekends off but it is a long weekend with 5 days off in a row, we work 7 days in a row before any rest days!

Full time Gateline for SWT is a 37h Contract, your hours and 4-weekly pay average out to 37h a week although in reality some weeks you will work more than 37h and others less than 37h.

You get 34 days holiday a year but this includes Bank Holidays which you must work if it falls on your normal roster otherwise you use a day holiday to book it off. Also there is no overtime available ever!

It's definitely a stepping stone, I have been doing the role for a bit over a year and am trying to move on now!

What station will you be based at?

I work as a Gateline Assisstant for SWT and my rota varies from that of Urban Gateline. Mine rotates through 8 weeks with a 4 day weekend every 4 weeks.

I've been doing it for just over 6 months now and have enjoyed it. Take every opportunity you can to learn and put the experience to use in other roles in the future. I'm currently trying for Guard and feel so much better prepared for this now I have been working in the company. And I've got some cracking references from my managers .

Righteo. Standard roster for a few category B stations in the Suburban Area for South Western Trains

The week starts on a Sunday. For general refence - Early Turn (ET) is 6:00 - 14:00, Late Turn (LT) is 14:00 - 22:00, Sundays are Early Turn only; 9:30 - 17:30. Sun-Mon-Tue-Wed-Thur-Fri-Sat.

Week 1: Early, Early, Early, Early, Early, RD, RD
Week 2: RD, RD, RD, LATE, LATE, LATE, LATE
Week 3: RD, LATE, LATE, RD, RD, LATE, LATE
Week 4: Late, SPARE, SPARE, SPARE, RD, SPARE, SPARE
Week 5: Early, Early, Early, Early, Early, RD, RD
Week 6: RD, RD, RD, LATE, LATE, LATE, LATE
Week 7: SPARE, SPARE, RD, SPARE, SPARE, SPARE, RD
Week 8: RD, LATE, LATE, RD, SPARE, Early, Early.

After week 8 you return to week 1 rinse and repeat ad nauseum.

On the occassion you're working a spare turn you'll either get sent to a smaller station, which will have its barrier operation times extended, cover another large or your own station due to sickness, annual leave or be proper spare at your home station. In that case you do barrier cleaning duties, customer service, passenger assistance and other misc duties.

In the Suburban area, a full time position is 37 hours per week on average - some weeks you work 32 hours, other weeks you work 40 or mor, but overtime is offered quite often, which is paid at standard rate.

As in the London area (or at least CLJ) there is no overtime offered at all, agency STM staff come to cover any shortfalls...:cry: Not fair to those who actually want to earn some extra!

You guys roster sounds good for days off but I'd rather use some of them RD to earn more. I work for FCC & get a Sunday at least 3 out of 4 weekends (no one has to work Sundays) but you get £133 a shift if you do. Plus RD OT is quite common again 2-3 a month works out about £125 a shift.

Don't have to work BH's & shift times are good.

Early - 05:45-12:45 or 06:00-13:00
Middles - 12:30-19:30
Lates - 13:30-20:30 or 15:15-22:15

35 hrs pw.

Its good to get an insight into what others do. I had an interview for guard with SWT but was offered a start with First at the same time so took it.

The roster is that for the Brighton Yard barriers, the other 2 exits have a separate Roster which is more complicated, in that it includes "spare" shifts and has a different pattern of when rest days are.

There is never any overtime for us Gateline staff, the company pay STM agency staff to cover any uncovered shifts, as much as we don't agree there is nothing we can do.

The wage for full time is just over £1k a month after deductions assuming you pay into the Pension, otherwise about £1100 a month if you don't.

Good luck with the recruitment process, at the moment we are short of Gateline staff there so it would be nice to see some extra faces that aren't Agency staff!

Training only takes about 2 Weeks mostly based at Basingstoke, maybe Southampton now as Recruitment has moved there. Then you spend about 4-6 Weeks coaching at your Home station (Clapham). The hours are around 9-4 Mon-Fri for the 2 weeks initial training.

With regards to Weekends, unfortunately you won't be getting many off with this job, that is the reality. 1 in 3 weekends you get off, if you want more than that you have to use Holiday allowance to book it off. That is the reality of shift work!

If you have any more specific Questions please ask, but I guess you will find out more when you actually start and there will be plenty of other people to ask.

Hello Ash,

I didn't see anyone new on the Roster yet, I guess the managers will give you your shifts when you come in on the first day, normally you shadow someone for a week or two until you get your own line on the roster so it may be a bit difficult to say far ahead which shifts you'll be doing.

One good thing with Gateline (along with Booking Office) is that at least the shifts tend to be far less punishing than other roles on the railway like Driver and Guard
