Anybody know why a SWT 158 was leading a FGW{ex TPE} 158 into the bay platform at Fareham, around 17:15 today?

One presumes this was the 1F23 1430 Cardiff Central - Fareham 1726. I did hear that a SWT 158 would be going out on loan to FGW, but not this soon! I presume the unit was a failure at Salisbury or something?

the SWT one didn't happen to be 883 or 890 did they? They have both just come back from loan to EMT, maybe an odd shunt before returning home?

I couldn't see the numbers as i was driving along the access road to the depot

wish we had them permanently. Our 158s are piffle. Didn't travel on either. saw both in service, managed to film 863 at derby and 890 at edale

And just as EMT give 883 and 890 back, guess what I see today on a Liverpool-Norwich EMT? 158886 in SWT livery

Same reason why FCCTL doesn't keep the same two 317s each time. Mechanical reasons.

I guess Salisbury don't trust Derby (or whereever) enough to look after them properly.
I think there will be two 158s on hire from SWT to EMT for the foreseeable future, at least until the 10 car diagram(s) come in to play down here.

They are more likely to get trashed, thus if the units are rotated they can even out the bruising.
Was on an unrefurbished159 the other day, and I would say they aren't doing too badly considering its been a good few years since they were refurbished. The unit was tired but plush compared to some of the crap churned out on FGW/ATW!

sorry, but the south west has much higher levels of vandalism than notts, even tho we do get some...
also, i know that a lot of the EMT mainline fleet is heavily overhauled at either etches park in derby or neville hill, as eastcroft in nottingham is no more than 10 years old

Surely thats understandable? An area with, say, 15 - 20 million people is going to have a lot more vandalism than a city of 300,000!
The only really dodgy areas the 158s go through is Redbridge/Millbrook and St Denys. Even then, they mostly have K-reg Mitsubishi Battle Warriors to drive into what they incorrectly brand as town. I wouldn't say Salisbury could be classified as a dodgy area, and the rest is mostly "naice" little towns.

FSR operate trains to some pretty crappy areas. Glasgow is a great city, but many of the residents live below the UK poverty line and, if you shade areas in the poorest 15% of British households, Glasgow is pretty well shaded. But it's rare to see vandalism on a FSR train. Inside the trains, there are occasional ethings on seats and windows, but I've never seen external grafitti or vandalism in anyway.

The "South West" isn't very rough TBH, perhaps you are refering to the London/South/South East area.
We all like in farm houses and drive Land Rovers all over the place in order to care for our cows.

Graffiti is pretty uncommon as most TOCs don't put out a graffiti'd unit (though that does lead to short formations).
Northern keep graffiti units on the line, which i see no problem with. it is better than short formations, it's just to get you from A-B, Ive been on many graffiti units (90% Northern rail, they have it bad, the north-west is the worst area for railway crime according to NR)
