Hi I am visiting Devon for 2 weeks in July and will be spending a couple of days at Salisbury and taking a trip to Lymington Pier, im wanting to see as many of the 158 units as possible. Please can anyone shed any light on which other services use SWT 158s, ive listed the ones below which I know of:

3x 158 units work Salisbury - Romsey via Southampton services.
1x 158 on loan to FGW for the Golden Valley services.
1x 158 works the Lymington Pier services.

which other services out of Salisbury are booked to have 158s attached to them.

cheers in advance.

A few are used to strengthen Peak services to and from Waterloo (the 8 and 10 coach trains to/from Salisbury), in between they are stabled on Salisbury depot.

One works a 17 something or other train from Exeter to Axminster, I am not sure what it does before or after that.

I believe these are the 158 diagrams, they're quite hard to work out now because a few trains have been, or will be replaced by EMUs.

There used to be another diagram working over electrified lines, but as far as I can tell that is now covered by a 450 in the morning and 159 in the evening. The 1746 Exeter St Davids-Axminster isn't booked a 158 but has quite often been a 158 since the electric diagram ended.

That would be:

5T06 0550 Fratton-Eastleigh
2T07 0702 Eastleigh-Portsmouth
2T28 0805 Portsmouth-Eastleigh

I worked it this morning and it is now a 4 car 450.

The afternoon working is the 1624 Basingstoke-Portsmouth which has gone from 3 159 to 4 450.

I thought that was the case. And therefore the 1638 Winchester-Totton is now a 159 instead of a 158.

They will make their mind up what is working that train one day!
When I started it was a 170 (from Reading to Brighton)
Then it was a 6x159 (to Portsmouth)
then a 450
then a 3x159
and now back to a 450!

Presumably that is the one which forms the 1818 Southampton-Winchester and preceding inbound working to Southampton (I guess it goes ECS Totton to Winchester then forms a down Winchester-Southampton service) which stops St Denys around 1800? I quite often see that as it coincides with coming home from work and has been a 159 certainly since autumn 2011.

Strangely this one is advertised standard class only. Why is this? Plans to convert to one of the "standard only" 450s used on the Windsor lines, etc, at some point in the future?

SWT intend these and a few other 'Hampshire locals' as peak extra capacity for busy flows such as school or college finishing times etc, in a web chat a few months back they said that it is better to use the capacity for standard only.

For info, the 'standard only' 450/5s have all been returned to 'near normal'. (There are still a few standard seats less than a 450/0.)

Is the 0751 from Southampton Central to Portsmouth Harbour now worked by a 450 instead of a 159?

I haven't seen any change recently. RealTimetrains still seems to have it running up to Salisbury via platform 3 after the return service gets back to Southampton at around 1035 or so, with the next departure to Portsmouth leaving from platform 1 as now.

It still seems to be the same after the timetable change as well.

That's odd, RTT shows it's still timed for an EMU, and the 1007 Romsey to Salisbury still has a nine minute wait at Southampton Central (presumably for the 159 to join).

As always, the timing doesn't actually mean it must be operated by an EMU. It might not have even been changed since it was last operated by a 450.

Not sure if it's the same working as the 0751, but the Portsmouth to Southampton which arrives just after 1030 is definitely still a 159, or was in April (April 8 IIRC), I remember seeing it advertised as a through Salisbury service at stations between Southampton and Portsmouth.

Yes it is, that's the return working of the same unit, and why I referred to it as arriving at 'about 1035' (actually 1038) a few posts ago...

As a peak version of the normal Portsmouth Southampton stopper it runs a bit later than the normal xx44 on the way down to Portsmouth Harbour, arriving at 0857, and departs at 0933. So it has that 36 mins dwell time at the south end of the route, rather than the normal 55 minutes...

Just following this up - as of now (1009 Monday) National Rail LDBs showed it calling at Swanwick as a through service to Salisbury. But with their fairly usual error of noting it as splitting at Southampton Centrtal with a portion going to Salisbury. They often seem to mistake joining for splitting on LDBs...
