railway messages need to be structured correctly i.e emergnecy or not , who u are , what u are ,confirm u are speaking to the correct person, what the incident is , what action is required ,and reapeating back any information to get a clear understanding

As the verbal assessments don't form part of the assessments of most other copmpanies doesn't that mean you've passed the core standards assessments anyway and whilst if you fail this again with SWT you might be excluded you haven't necessarily failed with other TOC's? Or does the verbal test with SWT replace the glop exercise for other TOC's?

Might be worth checking that out, otherwise if a trainee position comes up elsewhere you might be accepted straight for interview. If the verbal test is a replacement for the glop (trainability) test and you are that worried about 2nd time failure perhaps it's worth waiting to apply for a position with another TOC anyway as the trainability test may well be easier for you?

There is the comprehension test which is multiple choice answers and very easy. This comes under the verbal banner I think

I done that one with SWT and passed i could not say there are any guides as such just basically make sure you listen to the tape make as many notes as possible and take in as much as possible. As a previous post mentioned being a train driver is about being able to relay safety critical messages especially when under pressure you will not always have time to react as quickly as you want so my advice to you will be on the next visit just listen take in as much as possible and absorb it. Also i wouldnt worry about this test affecting your two atempts as this is unique to SWT

Ifailed on this one last year. the only thing i could put down to was that i didnt use the phonetic alphabet, you know roger charlie bimbo bongo etc. Strange that with all other tests you are given practice materials but not this one. best of luck

hi did not realise this was unique to SWT so if i was to fail again (hope not) but passed the rest would that mean i could try some others like great western?

So its not worth doing that one day course??

You could do each TOC differs so for example London Overground do a fault finding excercise that SWT are trialing (they were when i was doing the exams) but they were both very similar so depending on TOC some are just different

You won'r need maths but if you go to pieces easily on something like maths what will happen if you are driving a train and things go wrong? Will you go to pieces?

Wow you must be one of those very lucky people who never had a knock back and passed every test taken .I totally understand what your saying but were all different some go through assessments first time some second & some never make the grade .I didn't perform as well as I expected, all I can do is try my best, good enough or not i will find out soon.

hi

i have taken and passed this test and i dont anything on here could give you a script to remember.

the best advice would be to repeat what had already been said by other posters. when it is being read out to you write down as much as you can.

when you rewrite it for you to say, then take out all the information that isnt really that important and focus on...

who you are
what has happened
what needs to be done
is anyone in danger
are you ok to contiune

and if possible (if you dont already know it) learn the phonetic alphabet

i think it was easier for me as I was a guard when i did the test and had made no less then 3 emergency calls to the signaller before!!
