Can anyone explain why the armrest nearest the window on the trains that run to Weymouth etc is fixed rather than moveable? It looks as though it could have been movable but has been deliberately fixed.

It’s a common feature on almost every train in the country. Some trains, such as the TfW 175s and the GWR/LNER/TPE/HT 80X have moveable armrests at the window.

I believe some trains might have them locked in place to prevent them colliding with the walls in trains with tapered bodies. There isn't much reason to raise them anyway.

That's probably it. Thanks. As to wanting to raise them - if both seats are free and toy want to spread out a bit the arm rest makes this pretty uncomfortable!
