Hello,

I’m heading down to Southampton on 4 January which I understand is a strike day so wondered where the SWR 444s and 450s would likely be stabled given the reduced service please?

I’m guessing Northam, Bournemouth and Fratton but is there anywhere else?

Many thanks

Clapham Yard will have some. A few 450’s will no doubt be in Wimbledon depot. Due to the larger than usual number needing stabling it wouldn’t surprise me to see some in bay platforms like Portsmouth Harbour, Portsmouth and Southsea and Waterloo. A couple of 444’s could be in Weymouth for the same reason. Farnham also has a stabling/light maintenance depot so a few will no doubt be there. Don’t *usually* see 444’s in Wimbledon, but its not impossible for one to end up there. Guildford and Basingstoke also have stabling sidings which can be used.

Hope the following info will be of help to you for your travels on Wed 4th Jan :

As its a strike day then the only services running for you to travel on will be :

2 Trains an hour to Southampton / 2 trains an hour to Basingstoke / 2 trains an hour to Windsor / 2 trains an hour to Woking.

Southampton services are formed 10x444 or 12x450, Basingstoke services 12x450, Windsor services 10x458 or 10x707,
Woking services 12x450.

Stabling points are Clapham Yard both 444/450 berthed, Feltham Depot 450 berthed, Eastleigh DCS 450 berthed &

Northam Depot both 444/450 berthed. Possible 450 berthed in Wimbledon Park and Barton Mill sidings at Basingstoke.

If you catch a GWR to Ports Hbr from Southampton then you will see 444/450 berthed at Fratton Depot and Ports Hbr.

There are no services west of Southampton nor on the Portsmouth Direct from Woking towards Havant.

GWR won’t be running the Cardiff - Portsmouth route east of Westbury on that day - there won’t be any services on any of West Coastway (apart from Brighton - Hove, which probably isn’t very useful for you).

Only way to get down to Portsmouth that day would be the First X4 Solent Ranger from Southampton, but it’s usually allocated single deckers and can unsurprisingly get busy on strike days.

Thanks to everyone for your input, really useful.

I’m heading to the football by car and was planning to park up and then use the train once down there to get better views

Worth mentioning whilst the strike summary hasn’t been released for the 4th January, previous strike days indicate the only stations open in the local area (i.e. south of but including Eastleigh) will be Eastleigh, Southampton Airport Parkway and Southampton Central.

I would put 5p on the strike timetable for the 4th January batch to be identical to the strike timetable for last week.
