Can anbody tell me what diagrams I am likely to find SWT 158's on. They only seem to occasionally run on the Waterloo-West of England runs and I've not seen them at Bristol on the Salisbury-Bristol runs on the couple of occasions I've been there either.

Thanks

You'll find them operating the Salisbury 6 services of which there are 3 diagrammed for daily (Salisbury - Romsey via Southampton Central and Romsey - Salisbury via Southampton Central), you'll also find them operating various peak services to and from London, and also on the Basingstoke - Eastleigh corridor.

No South West Trains Class 158s are actually booked West of Salisbury, so if you see any further west its very much to stand in for a 159 or to add capacity as required.

3 on Salisbury to Romsey locals
1 on Brockenhurst - Lymington (weekdays)

A few short workings on Hampshire locals, or on Basingstoke/Portsmouth peak extras.

Most of the rest of the daily usage is as part of the formation of longer trains between Waterloo and Salisbury, usually these reduce in size at Salisbury and only 159s proceed further west.

They will only go to Bristol or Exeter if there are problems with the diagrammed 159s.

Basically if all goes well, unless you head at least to Salisbury you'll never catch one at your locations.

Indeed. I've seen one SWT 158 from where I live between St Davids and Central since September!

08:50 Waterloo - Exeter is formed of 2x 159 2x 158 with the rear unit locked out of use. I think the 16:20 Salisbury is also formed of 2x 159 1x 158 also.

The best place is the London end of Salisbury station, you will see the ones on the salisbury 6 and the ones added to/detached from the WoE trains.

Huh, do you mean 1620 Waterloo to Salisbury, or 1620 from Salisbury to (somewhere)? If the latter, I don't think there is one, and when there was one it was 3x 159 (it's now the 1621).

I think the 1620 WAT - EXD (1L49) is formed of two 159s and a 158 at the London end. Although this is from a video I filmed in February 2012, so may not be relevant anymore. The train divides at Salisbury with the 158 remaining there and the two 159s continuing to EXD.

I've seen three since September and yet you live in view of the line :P

(Basically that probably shows that I spend too much time at St Davids ;) )

Sorry, but what is the difference between 158s and 159s, are some 2 car and some 3 car units?

Yes, 158s are 2 car, 159s are 3 car.

the unit from the 0805 Portsmouth-Baskingstoke stays in Barton Mill sidings and then forms a 1638 Winchester-Totton before working back to Basingstoke ECS.

Of course that only applies for SWT. At other TOCs both 2 car and 3 car trains are 158s.

SWT have 159s as a legacy of the 159/0 being a NSE spec 3 car 158. The differences (as originally supplied) were retention toilets and 2+1 first class seating in 159s. They also have the more powerful 400BHP Cummins engines.

The 159/1s originally ran in service as 3 car 158s but were totally refurbished to the same specification as the 159/0s but they have the 350BHP Cummins engines.

SWT 158s are the same spec as SWT 159/1s but are 2 car.

By chance, I may be travelling on a 159 & 158 tomorrow as all being well, I am travelling around part of the SWT network. 0920 Waterloo to Salisbury, connecting to the SWT service onto Southampton, then on to what ever electric unit they are using to Portsmouth & SS, probably a blue desiro, wait there for 20 mins for another SWT to Portsmouth Harbour, then a blue or maybe awhite desiro to Waterloo.

I do recal several years ago travelling on a 2 coach SWT diesel unit from Brighton, (I got off it at Havant) but I think it was going to Basingstoke & onto to Reading.

SWT did have some services along the south coast and also from Portsmouth for a while some to B/Stoke & Reading, (I am not sure if these were then 158s or 159s, or perhaps something else as I do recal too a declassifield 1st class bit at the front.) SWT did have also a very infrequent service from Brighton to Plymouth, all now sadly gone, along with their servcies from Waterloo beyond EXD to Plymouth, Paignton and even once a week to Penzance.

might be worth mentioning that the full route Salisbury - Romsey service is (principal stations only listed while trains stop at all stations)

Salisbury
Romsey
Southampton Central
Eastliegh
Chandler's Ford
Romsey (again!)

Then reverse of above route

While the OP asked for SWT 158's, Southampton central is also served by FGW Bristol - Portsmouth

Probably a 170 if it was going to Reading.

Advance notice for Tuesday 11 June:
1L13 is due to be a 5 car formation (159 + 158) throughout, instead of the 158 being detached at Salisbury. (There is an open day at Exeter University, so presumably increased loadings being anticipated)

Indeed. There are also a few trains a day that don't go on to Salisbury, but just go Romsey to Romsey - I don't know why, presumably someone else does.

The full station list is

Salisbury
Dean
Mottisfont & Dunbridge [used to be Dunbridge, was renamed since Mottisfont station and the Andover to Redbridge line had closed years before]
Romsey
Redbridge
Millbrook
Southampton Central
St. Denys [used to be Portswood, was renamed because people were getting on the wrong trains thinking they went to Portsmouth]
Swaythling
Southampton Airport (Parkway)
Eastleigh
Chandler's Ford
Romsey.

From Salisbury (and presumably from Mottisfont & Dunbridge and Dean, if they have announcements which I doubt, them being FGW stations) they're announced as terminating at Chandler's Ford. Can the system not handle trains stopping twice at the same stop or do they not wish to cause confusion?

The system can handle it, but they have setup 'false destinations' for the trains to make the services easier for passengers to understand. At Eastleigh late at night I have heard an announcement of a train to Romsey, from Romsey for 2207 and 2258 Romsey to Romsey services. These 'false destinations' also occur in London for the Waterloo to Waterloo loop services, as you go around the loops the destinations of the trains change to fit in with if there is a faster way to get somewhere that the loop service calls at.

At Romsey, the trains via Chanders Ford first are 'Redbridge via Eastleigh', with the services via Redbridge first announced as 'Chanders Ford via Southampton Central'.

Yes, 170 does ring a bell infact.

The journeys I planned for yesterday on the above routes/trains went very well indeed. It's a nice route routes from Salisbury to Southampton. I did have an incident though in the loo of the white desiro from Portsmouth to Waterloo in the middle coach which is a larger toilet. The unlocking buttons did not work and I could not manually open the door, lucky enough the guard heard me banging and opened it from behind. He said there was not much water left in the cistern hence the door locking problem???? I could not quite work that out. Anyway apart from that, a good day out.

If the water tank is nearly empty then the toilet will lock itself out of use automatically (fault code is 7309, we see it quite a lot ;)) to prevent damage to the vacuum flush system.

Wow, that's insanely bad design. Why can't it be opened from the inside? Surely a person being inside should override it? ;)

I always thought the internal buttons would work regardless.

If they dont then it is a stupid design.

Ah, the Thai '158-alike' units! These things fascinate me. I understand that they have begun to be withdrawn from service? Half expecting some of the leasing co's to buy them for further use over here; we could do with some more :D

For the curious, these were (I believe) built by BREL and are essentially a 158 shell fitted out to very basic standards. There are no gangway connections (or tail lamps, hence the red circle in the cab window), 'hole in the floor' toilets and very spartan interiors. The usual fibreglass skirting panel on the front end is omitted, leaving just the bare framework as sometimes seen on a UK 158 undergoing maintenance. They were also painted a very similar livery style to the original Regional Railways 'Express' colours on the 158s.

Photos of these units seem to be rare, does anybody on here have some?!
