Hi All,

I've not been able to find clear information on this via the SWR website. It's all a little vague and focused on travelling out of London.

I am travelling from Parkstone (Dorset) back to East Croydon, via Clapham Junction. I have a super off peak open return.

Some information suggests I can't arrive back into Clapham Junction between 1600-1900 but other information says I can return on any train after 1200.
Can anyone clarify?

Not valid to depart London Terminals after 04:29 and before 12:01, after 15:59 and before 19:01. Additionally, not valid to depart if boarding at the following stations:

  • Clapham Junction: after 04:29 and before 12:01, after 15:59 and before 19:10
  • Vauxhall: after 04:29 and before 12:01, after 15:59 and before 19:05
if https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=PKS&dest=ECR&expert=on&flow=0&multi=0&fare=8&ldn=1&tkt=SSR is the correct ticket

No - it’s the other way round isn’t it? You are using the return portion of a ticket from East Croydon to Parkstone?
Not valid on trains timed to arrive London Terminals after 04:29 and before 14:01
That’s it. So any train from Parkstone timed to arrive in Waterloo after 14:00 will be fine. The 12:02 or later, yes.

The return portion is to travel back from Parkstone to East Croydon.

I would be changing trains at Clapham Junction between 1559 and 1910 if I get on many of the mid afternoon trains from Parkstone, so does that count as "not valid if boarding" at Clapham Junction? It's very confusing.

I'd like to get the 1502, 1602 or 1702 from Parkstone on a weekday. But can't tell if I can!

You can also look up your ticket’s restriction code UP at https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ticket-types/validity/up/

The restriction code is shown on the ticket you have.

No, go back and look at my amended post. I have clarified and it’s very simple, the 12:02 train or later.

There are different restrictions for Super Off-Peak tickets on different journeys/routes. The answer depends on the restriction code associated with the ticket you have.

If you are travelling on the outward portion of a Super Off-Peak Return from Parkstone to East Croydon, the restriction code is BD. As you can see in the full text shown on nre.co.uk/BD (this link would be printed on the ticket), the restriction is effectively two-fold:
  1. You can't take any train that is timed to arrive at London Terminals before 14:01
  2. You can't take any train that is timed to depart from Clapham Junction between 16:00-19:09 (inclusive)
If you want to leave Parkstone at a time where your connecting train would depart Clapham Junction between 16:00-19:09, you are probably better off only using your Super Off-Peak Return as far as Clapham Junction, breaking your journey on that ticket, and then using Oyster or contactless for the remaining section from Clapham Junction to East Croydon.

Even with the peak PAYG fares which are charged between 16:00-19:00 (£4.80) this would work out cheaper than paying the higher price of an Off-Peak Return.

However, you have now clarified that you are using the return portion of a ticket issued from East Croydon. That has a different restriction code, UP (nre.co.uk/UP). The restrictions applicable on the return journey for that restriction code are only that you can't arrive into London before 14:01. That means there are no evening peak restrictions departing Clapham Junction towards East Croydon.
