Is Desiros a typo there?
Only typo is that I probably should have included an apostrophe in Desiro, but yes I was replying to someones comment asking about 444040.

Ah I see, sorry I lost track of which stock was being discussed, cos of the 442 stuff above. But you’re correct in not having an apostrophe in Desiros.Only typo is that I probably should have included an apostrophe in Desiro, but yes I was replying to someones comment asking about 444040.

What you saw there believe it or not actually is the finished livery of the 442s (bar some labels I expect). Looks bland I know, but that's what they've apparently gone with.Hi all, I've been following this thread for a while but never posted, but today saw something that might be of interest. A 442 unit, (or parts of 2 units) at Fratton Railcare Depot.
What I found interesting was the fact that a few cars had the part repaint (grey baselayer) whereas the other cars hasn't been touched with the paintbrush (see a rather dodgy picture 2).
I didn't think at this stage there were any 442s left without any signs of refurbishment, when they're supposed to be entering service so soon. Hope this is of interest!
Yes it is due out immanently, the union were supposed to be invited to review the unit and come to an agreed method of working on Desiros, including restricting people passing in back cabs, but with the latest round of action announced the invitation was withdrawn.
What's the deal with restricting people passing in back cab?
If I'm not mistaken the 444/450 have a guards compartment in one of the coaches, so why would their belongings be in the rear cab?No official policy as far as I’m aware at the moment, just some guards trying to protect their personal belongings a bit more than others. It’s sad but it’s not unknown for a very very tiny percentage of staff to steal off the rest.
Because the refurbishments remove the guards compartment. If I'm not mistaken the 444/450 have a guards compartment in one of the coaches, so why would their belongings be in the rear cab?
Ah OK, that'll be why then!Because the refurbishments remove the guards compartment.

444040 and 450113 are leaving Eastleigh Works today, after spending over 10 months in there each.

No different to 158/159s where the back cab is the Guard's "office" or centre cabs on the suburban units. Will annoy those who think Desiro cabs are their own private compartments though - and no, not passing crew.No official policy as far as I’m aware at the moment, just some guards trying to protect their personal belongings a bit more than others. Why does that not surprise me? I'll be interested to see if it's as underwhelming as SWT's "major refurbishment" of the 458s as part of their reconfiguration.I have seen some photos of the fully refurbished units, so they do definitely exist. I have to say, the work done is incredibly underwhelming. Not up to the standards you would expect for units out so long.
Yes, it's retrimmed and repadded seats, new carpets and sockets. That's it. SWT had the walls repainted as part of a minor refresh a few years ago so no real need to attend to them again, I'd have thought. From what I have seen from the photos, the part refurbished 450s are not as partly done as I think most assumed. The orange grab poles still remain for example, and it appears the walls have not been painted either.
Do they have to be high contrast for visibility reasons? Not much point in change if any other options are equally garish...You'd think SWR would paint them in their own brand colours though. Stagecoach orange grab poles just don't look right.
It has been suggested that the light blue was not contrast enough.Do they have to be high contrast for visibility reasons? Not much point in change if any other options are equally garish...
The handrails in the new Abellio trains appear to be light grey against a light grey background, so not much contrast there. It has been suggested that the light blue was not contrast enough.
The 450s still need their first class moving and guard office removing.
I've seen interior shots of 444040 and there are now four airlines seats where the guards office was plus four more where the buffet used to be. As expected the seats added in place of the buffet have no window view. First class is 2+2 and pretty much the same as 450 first class.
I saw a picture of 444040 in Dorset earlier on what appeared to be a service train.
The 442s certainly won't. If, however, that Norwegian Blue parrot called the "Electric Spine" has an opportunity to "voom", the Desiros may yet.Looking at the Sprinter version of the livery, the orange cantrail does wonders to break up the monotony of the livery. I know the Desiros and 442s will never see an overhead wire but it would make so much difference.
Do you happen to have a link to the shots in question?
