I was surprised to notice earlier today in Basingstoke an SWR Class 158 just arrived from Reading. On further investigation, over the New Year period it seems that SWR are running a frequent Basingstoke / Reading / Basingstoke service, alongside the usual GWR service

But - any ideas why? Gives them something to use the stock for, I suppose, with the planned engineering between Basingstoke and Salisbury?

Come the first working days of 2021, it seems to be back to GWR only as usual...

Think there is a swr service at weekends , maybe only Sunday, but very infrequent.

Not sure if it's been increased. Surprised it's not be cancelled as crew shortages at Salisbury, though seem to recall the involvement of managers in the BSK/rdg workings.

I think it was down to run this week due to the partial closure of Waterloo, giving more options to go via Paddington.

Normally runs during the day on Sundays and one late train from Salisbury weekdays heads that way (21:47 or so), however that one returns to Salisbury ECS (think that one goes via Southampton)

Seems fair enough, but oddly I couldn't find mention of it running anywhere on the SWR website!

I would imagine due to tier 4 the trains would be carrying around fresh air.
Certainly judging by the loadings of the replacement buses in this area
