According to LRR 5873 Was detached last night from 5870. It sits at Wimbledon. 5870 now with 5721.
5720 that was with 5721 yesterday, is also at Wimbledon.

Is this the first steps in the run down of the 458/4 fleet to their demise (and possibly the conformation that 458401 and 458418 won't be seen in service again)?

The two that arrived last week are at the very south end of the site on or adjacent to the electric test track, close to Osmaston Road not too far from its junction with Ascot Drive (unit / car numbers will be a challenge but the vehicles can be seen from the road).

The units that have been taken to Derby are parked right at the back of the yard at Litchurch Lane, possibly along side the test track. The roof lines of some are just visible from Osmaston Road.

Thank you both for the information, I was thinking of going to see them, but I didn't want to waste my time if they were out of sight.

What’s the reason for indirectly replacing a 458 diagram with a 455 one from next week (which seems counter productive even if the 458s aren’t destined to be here forever)? Poor availability?

Feels like the end is creeping in.
Only 5 full day 8 car diagrams. Plus the morning diagram ending with 0820 Woking Waterloo and the evening 8 car diagram starting with 1702 Waterloo Guilford. The 4 car weybridge AM and PM turns also still exist.

Units out are shown on LRR as: 5701, 5702, 5708 (AM), 5709, 5710, 5716 (4 car), 5721, 5729, 5732, 5737, 5863 (AM), 5869, 5871.

455s can't replace any 458 diagrams directly (without cancelling stops) which makes covering for a shortfall difficult. The availability hasn't been great this week leading to a 4-car diagram somewhere each day.

From an outsider perspective, while SWR have the 455s available they may as well use them. A 5X95 ran today which usually is a 458/4 getting a C4 at Bournemouth and one unit fewer to cover the 458/4 diagrams. The first month/couple of weeks without the 455s is going to be tight and will be easier with the other fleets in best possible shape. Doing as much scheduled maintenance outside that period is one way to help with that. SWR would have the option to return to 24 458/4 diagrams once the 455s are fully withdrawn to avoid increasing the 701 requirement by one.

For those of us who like thrash, I would suggest a seat above 5737's power bogie nearest the 508 trailer and on 5709 the one nearest the driving trailer. Both provide a loud symphony.

Both were out together today. I saw them on the 2D23 10:54 Waterloo - Guildford when taking a final trip to see these old workhorses in service.

Spoilt for choice there. I too had a sample. Unlike today, if what's shown on LRR is true, no 455s are out today.

It might be 4 sets rather than four units. The 701 thread suggests one introduction week commencing 8th and two further on the new timetable which would be 4 sets assuming the 455 increase to cover for 458/4 continues into the next timetable period.

Drag wise on Monday there's a move from Wimbledon to Derby and paths in for the ROG loco to be at Wembley on Tuesday so potentially another on Wednesday as well.
