SWR Exeter/Salisbury Sprinters stopping at Clapham Junction

SWR's Sprinters are shown as "pick up only" at Clapham Junction on RTT.

I have yet to go on a 158/159 so I was thinking sticking entirely within London would make things very easy.

Do the Sprinters always stop at Clapham Junction? (both to and from Waterloo)

I was thinking they should given how it's on RTT, but I feel like SWR could change this with no notice, making me stuck on a train with no ticket to Exeter.

They'll stop as it's an advertised call for passengers waiting at Clapham Junction unlike a totally un-advertised call where there's no guarantee the train would stop nor that the doors would release even if it did.

Though technically if you were detected doing this you'd likely need to buy a ticket (or an excess fare) to the first station where the train set down. Personally I'd just get a ticket to Woking and enjoy a bit more of a run out than the five minutes to Clapham Junction. An Off-Peak Day Return is £19.40 without a railcard, £12.90 with one. Not a massive cost for a little run out. Or get on at Clapham Junction for £14.70 (£9.75 with railcard).

Towards Waterloo there are no restrictions on boarding so if you do want to stay within London that's the safest option.

However, be aware: not all 159 diagrams call at Clapham Junction. A few each way per day skip Clapham Junction altogether.

I don't have much experience with the Exeter trains, but on the pick up only SWML services to Bournemouth/Weymouth/Poole the guards usually announce the stop anyway with a note about front 8 cars only.

So I doubt most of them mind too much.

Generally the xx.20 and xx.50 services from Waterloo do stop at CLJ whereas the xx.53 and xx.23 services do not stop there at all.

Be aware though that if the CLJ stop is removed for any reason (for example, overcrowding) the change will not be announced on board as it is not a set down stop.

Yes that is absolutely right, although like most things on the railway…there are exceptions!

Used to be the case that the Xx50 services were first stop Woking on weekdays (pretty sure pre Covid some of those called at Clapham on Saturdays), but since they came back a couple of years ago (after the post Covid cut to run as Basingstoke - Salisbury shuttles) they have called at Clapham heading towards Salisbury.

I’ve just looked at RTT and yep you’re correct. In the up direction though the Salisbury stoppers don’t appear to call at Clapham regularly

Rough rule of thumb is the evening rush hour Class15X down services from Waterloo- starting with the 17.23 - do not call at CLJ. Of course, the 16.20 also has Woking as pick up only and the 16.50 calls at CLJ and then straight through to BSK, omitting Woking instead of Clapham Junction.

Most rush hour trains out of Waterloo are now first stop Basingstoke. Everything between 1650 and 1920 skips Woking now, and of those just the 1650 stops at Clapham.

Looking at the WTT dated September 1997 they were did this back then as well.
