I’m guessing there will be more jobs for Woking coming up as there’s a new ‘depot’ (I say depot, I mean siding really ) being built. Not sure how it’s going to look yet, or even if staff will have an office off the station, but the fact that there’s a full time MB2 (Maintenance Band) Shunter position there suggests it’s a standalone depot, unlike somewhere such as Guildford where the Shunter grade is an RO (Rail operator) and thus parts of the station team. MB shutters get a much better salary (£27k basic?) than RO Shunters who are on an RO salary (£18k basic).

Hi, yes on both counts. There’s staff parking at the station. Not sure if the depot will have additional parking but I assume it probably will. I think it’s some distance from the station (half a mile maybe?....assuming it’s where I think it is).

Yes. And Shunters normally take quite a bit of overtime. Not sure on the date exactly, but a friend of mine was a Shunter in London and he took around £40k a year before deductions. Admittedly it varies from depot to depot. The basic of an MB2 Shunter is made up of allowances making the base salary around £29k or so I believe, but the pensionable pay is a lot less which is worth bearing in mind.

There’s always ways to progress definitely. It depends what you want to do. As with a lot of other operational and safety critical roles on the railway, shunting is a good basis to gain experience if you want to get in to depot driving or mainline driving and should allow you to get the necessary experiences for some good examples to use at MMIs and DMIs etc.
