Cheaper to C4 a four car 455 than a five car 458, and the 455 is compatible with a larger fleet making it more flexible.

Of course the money would be better spent on getting the 701s into service.
And wheelsets/gearbox production lines are set up for churning out 100mph motor wheelsets at the moment.

I was not certain, but in the fading light last night I think that the pair nearest the running lines was 458423 & 458425 which hitherto have not worked passenger. But, I stress, I am not certain of that and I could be wrong. All should be revealed tomorrow morning when two pairs should be in traffic.

RTT has 415+421 on the original diagram (2S09 etc) and 420+422 on the new one (2V05 etc)

Can confirm I passed 420 on 2R11.

One of them already had the emergency windows open in several cars ready for service too!
Pet peeve of mine, 421/415 had them open in 7 of 8 vehicles on Friday, despite the Aircon working. Bet you it isn't working anymore...

I often go on 458s where all or some of the windows are open but the aircon is working fine.

458413+458427 entered service this afternoon on 2S45.
So that's six units in service within a month (and all six in operation on the same day) . Meanwhile, after six months, only five 701s have entered service, and never more than one a day.

They don't make them like they used to...................... !

458427 definitely looks (and smells!) very new inside. 458/5s are one of the most comfortable units on the network in my opinion; I am at least glad that the significant downgrade I expected didn't come to pass, and that they are actually being used!

The acceleration has seemed pretty slow - a consequence of the re-gearing, I presume?

The PIS is also warning us to be in the front 8 coaches for Syon Lane or Hounslow!

probably slow between barnes and kew bridge due to drivers having to use "power reduction mode or notch 2 only" due to problems with the power cables. I presume this will be resolved during the line closure next weekend.

The PIS has yet to be updated, doesn't seem like it will happen for another few months!

I don't think you can compare them to a brand-new train, they've literally taken a carriage out and re-geared them to what they were like originally. the 458's were terrible units when they first came into service.

Really not a fair comparison. One is a refurbishment, one is a new train type. One uses the same method of operation, one does not. Etc Etc.

Yes I enjoyed my trip on one. Far too good for the Portsmouth line, keep them for London

There was never much of a difference in acceleration when they went from four to five, as the extra length (yet same number of powered axles) countered the lower gearing.

What is back though is the boost capability, where if a traction pack is lost, the other two produce 50% more output to negate any loss from that traction pack being out. That was isolated on a 5 car.

Had 420 this morning, plenty of "nice new train" comments being thrown around!

458518 is the next unit to head for Widnes. It should leave Bournemouth depot Tuesday 30th July.

As the Wednesday prior to departure for Widnes is the usual stop day, then presumably 518 will get stopped when it arrives at Wimbledon Park tomorrow morning. That will leave 11 units for 10 diagrams, although I do not know what the plan is for 514 and whether it will return to service as a 5xx at some point?

Just seen 408 and 401 passing through Bournemouth looking very shiny.
