I have no first hand knowledge of today's scenario, but speak from past experience. Weekend crew availability is sometimes at a premium, and so numbers of bodies (trained on traction) will likely be somewhat less than on a Mon to Fri basis. In addition, it is likely that the initial diagrams (stock) will revolve around the Mon to Fri pattern, whereby on a Fri finish, units can be stabled at locations where they are not required again until the following Mon, such as Wimbledon depot, Clapham Yard etc., as a result of the crew issues as said. Once all such diagrams (those remaining spare at weekends) going over to the traction concerned have been exhausted (in the plan), that may well be the point in time that units will start to stable (on a Fri evening) at places where they have to be diagrammed on (at least) the Saturday, then Sunday, as no other stock type is available. Hope that makes sense? With the previous introduction of 458/5 units, this latter point in time came about half way through the introduction of said units, as a guide.
So in answer to your question, it may be a while yet....

Last weekend one of the 458s was stabled at Feltham. Presumably the one used Mon to Fri on Hounslow services. So not in use at the weekend

Hazard a guess, out of miles, and as not part of the (re) conversion plan, that's it...?
Spot on. Out of miles to C4 exam. It’s not part of the conversion programme and not worth spending the money on the exam, so it’s out of service.

There shouldn’t be a conversion course, the cabs haven’t changed and neither have any of the traction systems, when the change from 458/0 to 458/5 occured there was no conversion course, simply a reminder that the units could only be run up to 75mph
There was a conversion course for all the different equipment on the ex 460 coaches that wasn't quite the same as the 458/0

But it is worth spending money on C4s for 455s.

More short forms incoming, no doubt. Railway stuffing the punters again.

Some of the paths for this weeks transfer from/to Widnes are now on RTT. I think that this should be 458408 from Widnes and 458509 to Widnes. 69010 should be doing the honours.

Monday 15th July 2024
5Z53 0732 Leicester L.I.P. to Widnes Transport Tech

5Q62 1311 Widnes Transport Tech to Wembley Receptions 1-7

Tuesday 16th July 2024
not yet on RTT Wembley Receptions 1-7 to Southampton Central
not yet on RTT Southampton Central to Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D

5Z66 2018 Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D to Eastleigh East Yard

I have no wish to get in to verbal spat about these things, having been out the job for over a decade, but from what I can tell the 458 refurb (back to 4 car) is well on its way (fruitless or otherwise, we may come to differ on that aspect in due course?), but the few units that kicked off the 458/5 conversion back in the distant past, involving 460 vehicles for the most part, were designed to get that plan up and running without taking 458/0's out of traffic (at the time), but are now deemed as not required in the latest refurb, being non standard. Many of these 460 cars when looked over (very discreetly) prior to the 458/5 conversion, when in store at SL and some were already seen to be basket cases, believe me, but some still found their way in to the refurb programme just to make up numbers (of cars) required to meet the 'Departments' needs in relation to the franchise obligations at the time. It was what it was.
The 455's as remaining, are far more in number, are not subject to (another) rebuild, and so will continue to do the job they were designed for until the last of the 701's enters traffic, so keeping them (455's) going makes best sense under the circumstances.

Thank you for this information. Presumably the displaced 2*450 will eliminate another 2*458/5 diagram?

I don't think there's a reduction in 458/5 diagrams next week but a Reading diagram goes from 455 to 450.

Thank you for your reply. A Reading diagram going from 2*455 to 2*450 does make more sense although the recent loss of 458509 & 458531 must be putting pressure on the remaining 458/5 fleet. Of late, the number of 455s out of use seems to have increased along with the number of 455 diagrams running as 4v8 eg one of the Reading 455 diagrams today, so reducing the number of 455 diagrams is probably no bad thing.

Cheaper to C4 a four car 455 than a five car 458, and the 455 is compatible with a larger fleet making it more flexible.

Of course the money would be better spent on getting the 701s into service.

And I just came back Clapham Junction to Martins Heron this evening on a four car 455. Gosh that was sardines and hot.... but the train down to Ewell West this morning was 2*458/5 to compensate.

When are the last 458/5's due to go off lease/ run out of miles? Presumably not long now until SWR Suburban is almost entirely an 8 car operation (bar the single 701 diagram), taking us back 10 years.

is that instead of, or as well as, the existing one?
