Yes, it's a pretty impressive system. SWT/SWR have always done a good job with managing the crowds at Ascot.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

At Ascot, apart from an hourly bus service to Bracknell in one direction and Heathrow in the other there's no public transport alternatives, and the local road network can barely cope on race days anyway.

I wonder if SWR will move 458/5s off their normal diagrams on to Reading services for Royal Ascot, because they're the real crowd movers.
When I have caught a train with people returning from Royal Ascot, although some are horse sport fans, there are some obnoxious drunk groups, so perhaps high capacity 458/5s about to go for a refurb, or 455s about to retire might be good.
The 450s or refurbished 458/4s not so good if any drunks are about to be sick!

That's the same for any major race meet. If you think Ascot is bad you should try Aintree!

Tablelless 455s for Ascot goers get's my vote. Make's it difficult for them to, quite literally, poor and snort their drugs then!

On second thoughts, anyone got any Pacers spare?

It’s what Southern have done with the Lewes fireworks so it’s not completely out of the question
I don't think that's purely a railway decision though. The event has become a victim of its own success, with crowds bigger than it can really cope with. The local authorities and police have been trying to reduce the numbers of people coming from a distance, and closing the station is one way of achieving that, so long as it's well enough publicised in advance.

The sniffer dogs now deployed there ensure that's no longer a problem.
Unfortunately, where there's a will there's a way and some will still manage to get their fix. And having dealt with them, it's often not exactly the type of people you'd assume it to be.

Anywhere I digress from the 458s.

Does anyone know whether the refurbishment contract might be extended to the other 458s if the 701s do not make the introduction, in case extra capacity may be needed for services such as Ascot, or if the 455s are scrapped early? Or will all the ex 460 carridges be scrapped?

The whole point of the removal of ex class 460 vehicles was so that the units could be re-geared for 100mph running, therefore 8531-8536 will not form part of the refurbishment program. 455s will not be scrapped early, many vehicles are being sent by road to kilmarnock for corrosion repairs, and new bogies continue to be fitted.

Is this a second attempt at sending 458526 towards Widnes tomorrow? There is no onward movement shown from Eastleigh at this time, but that is a characteristic of these transfers to Widnes.

5Z66 1645 Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D to Eastleigh East Yard

Yes, 57303 dragged 458526 through Southampton at 1853 yesterday and I noted the same ensemble in the station yard at Eastleigh this evening.

According to my 2001 edition of the "Combined Volume", both Classes 458/0 and 460 were geared for 100mph, so is there any reason the ex-class 460 units 8531-8536 could not be reduced to 4-car like the others?

The reason for 4 car lengths was for 12 car operation from Portsmouth to free up 450s?
So maybe best to keep 8531-8536 5 car, and unrefurbished, as long as possible on the London suburban routes as long as possible till replaced by 701s, then sold or scrapped.

460s were geared for 125mph with 100mph service speed.

Paths for the onward movement of 458526 to Crewe and Widnes are now on RTT. The delivery of 458526 is so heavily delayed that the loco for the drag of 458412 to SWR will be at Widnes before 57303 departs for Leicester. That is assuming that there is not a change of plan and 57303 does the drag of 458412?

Sunday 9th June 2024
5Q97 1557 Eastleigh East Yard to Crewe

Monday 10th June 2024
5Q98 0520 Crewe to Widnes Transport Tech

0Z53 0722 Leicester L.I.P. to Widnes Transport Tech

Tuesday 11th June 2024
5X64 1127 Wembley Receptions 1-7 to Southampton Central

5Q64 1531 Southampton Central to Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D

Weren't they initially Gatwick express?
Might still have 10 years life left?. Battery conversion a possibility?. But not many operators want small fleets?

Today saw a full London bound 450 8 car train going though Egham fully loaded, with many standing, perhaps going to Twickenham rugby?.

458029 and 030 are also not being converted.

Lots of extra services through Twickenham today for the rugby.

On rugby days trains from Reading are often full by Wokingham.

460s were geared for 125mph.

One reason for 531-536 not to be converted is that the second toilet is in the vehicle that would be removed (TOSL).

Its a long Saga best understood by reading the thread - its probably the main topic.

But just to bore those who read it all and enlighten those who cannot/have-not :-

In the beginning there were 30 class 458s. They were 4car and geared for 100mph. That is before the 444s were even a twinkle in anyboies eye !.

At the same time there came into being the class 460 Gatwick express units. These were also express units (probably 125mpg gearing ?). They were longer than 6 cars.

Then long before Covid the 458s were converted to 75mpg and five coaches - using intermediate coaches from the 460s.
At the same time the rest of the 460s were converted into class 458 lookalikes - 5car 75mph.
So ended up with a total of 36 5car suburban units.

With the looming possibility (iirc) of a new suburban unit SWT (SWR ?) decided the 458s (all 36) were unwanted.

So the 5 car 458s were to be dispensed with entirely but became the rescue for the failed 442 conversion project. The 442 project was to provide trains for the Portsmouth direct to appease the users of that line who preferred 444s to 450s (its a long-ish distance route).

The 442 project was eventually abandoned (a saga in itself). So 458s to the rescue.

Only 28 of the 36 458s were needed for Portsmouth. A deal was struck with the ROSCO (Porterbrook iirc ?) to convert them BACK to 4car and 100mph. It meant two of the original 458s would not be converted and neither would the last six created out of 460s. The result would mean no vehicles out of the 460s would continue to be used. Seems that conversion cannot be backed out of.

Much dragging of heels has now ensued. Unions want the cabs refurbished and SWR don't seem intent on using the 458s for Portsmouth direct. Due to the almost non introduction of 701s (so far). The converted 458s seem to find themselves useful for suburban work as SWR is getting short of units usable for suburban work.

Meanwhile the overcrowding gets worse while passengers await the introduction of the mythical 701s.........
(a blooming great saga in itself)

As for battery conversion of 458s/460s. Maybe but a while off as any experiments / trials are more likely to continue to be done with the 230s.

I’ve heard that the 458s have not been approved for 12 car running due to concerns on the signal sighting due to the long corridor nose. This could be nonsense, or it could be another nail in the 458 project.

I'm not a driver but I'd have thought that the view from the front would remain the same no matter how many carriages are behind you?

Indeed, very bizarre!

I'm beginning to think there's some sort of conspiracy going on to ensure that the South Western never ever has any new or refurbished trains again.

12 car trains will usually be closer to the signal, if it’s offside or on a gantry the gangway may well obscure the view.

Is it that different to a Desiro, though?
I’m not a driver and I’ve never taken a tape measure to the various SWR gangways so I can’t answer. I’m only repeating a rumour I heard from a source I can’t name.

In which case the signal can be moved. That's what would happen on a properly functioning railway.

I would argue that a properly functioning railway would design trains to work on the infrastructure they are intended to be used on! Moving signals is not cheap.

Yes of course, it's perfectly reasonable that the designers of the 458s nearly 30 years ago should have predicted that in the mid 2020s there'd be a desired to use them on the Portsmouth direct in 12-coach formations and someone would raise the issue of signal sighting. How incompetent not to predict this...

Moving signals has been done before to accommodate particular stock, but OK, let's forget it - obviously too difficult on the South Western, like everything else it seems.

The original 458/0 cabs had corridor connections that folded virtually flat, although they had other well documented disadvantages. The current ones date from the conversion to 458/5s around a decade ago, though they may have reused an earlier design.

The standard gangway design that was introduced with the Electrostars and is still used on new build trains. And they've been used without issue on the 458s for a decade.

Given industrial relations currently I suspect there are issues being found where there wouldn't have been previously.

Does anyone know which 458 vehicles were on the move by road on Saturday afternoon? Three (at least) were heading north on the A429 and then onto the M40 north.
