Thanks, Did a search and found them in post #1,055 5 Dec 2022, so internally the refurbished 458s should look a bit like a refurbished 444 with 2 x 2 seating in both first and standard class?

Yes that’s right, both FISA, although the first class seats for the 458 have an in-my-opinion unfortunate looking moquette section in a clashing lighter blue.

For those after a very loud motor coach, 455 856's is still incredibly loud. 455857 was singing away quite nicely on Wednesday, same for 455720 :) 455909 was doing a decent job too.

Presume the 458 refurb includes: new carpet and seat covers, improved toilets and windows, to match 444 standards (just 1st class will have new seats)?.

Although the running gear has not changed much (other than the gearing), it may have updated control and customer route display software, so guess the refurb'ed 458 12 car will be tested on a test track at Widnes before the Waterloo - Portsmouth main line?.
Should not have the issues the 442s had, but there may be other unknown issues that may be found under testing?

There's no test track or 3rd rail at Widnes. The units will have to return south for any type of dynamic testing.

I noticed on the uk rail log page referred to earlier, according to the 442 section several units have been taken to Wolverton to be stripped for donor parts for 458's. Any idea what parts? Interior perhaps? Assume if swr paid for the refurb the bits are technically theirs? Or if not, a buy-back from Angel?

Why would they want the motors? It’s not like the 458s have DC motors that need replacing.

Does it have the Class 460 ribbon glazing? Those are the cars being removed.

If it is it’ll be an ex 460 carriage, first identified by the window ribbon glazing and smaller window in the doors.

As I understand it, SWT’s view was that the Onix traction system is better than the Siemens equivalent on the Desiros.

Certainly wouldn’t be the traction motors - why would you want to replace late 90s Alstom Onyx kit with BR EE 1960s kit?

All the 442s went through Wolverton upon departure, having certain bits of interior parts stripped and removed before being roaded away to Newport.

The majority of the 442s that went through Wolverton for stripping had been re-tractioned with new AC motors. Still no reason to replace the Onix kit on the 458s.

They're being stripped of parts because they now belong to someone else who wants parts.

I very much doubt anything from the 442s will work it's way onto the 458s.

No chance. The bogies wouldn’t fit back on a 458 with those motors plus the 458 motor connects via flender coupling to the gearbox, where the 442 was a pinion to gear wheel arrangement.

My immediate thought upon announcement of scrappage was all those seats with new covers etc., could be reused. Would they fit in a 458 without modifications though?

It’s neither here nor there, as they’re not using those seats, certainly not the standard class ones which are FISA not Chapman, and not the first class covers either which are part moquette unlike those in the 442s.
