Just had an email that 4 car parks are shutting all of next week. No reason given just operational reasons can anyone shed any light on this.

Aldershot, Alton, Fareham closed, Farnborough mostly closed.

Farnborough has a first floor deck is this linked to maintenance work. Surprised at the lack of notice.

Looking at the dates, I am going to guess that it is something to do with the coronation.

Alton 'has the builders in', and has been a mess for months. I think they may be at the stage of resurfacing the whole lot (plus white lining as well, I would hope).

There's no more information being shared with staff really.
"We have been asked by the DfT to work on a short term project during this period that requires closure of these car parks."

My guess is troop trains, there were some for the queen's funeral.

That would be my assumption given the apparent secrecy, and the links with the military for those locations.

The Alton closure clashes with the Watercress Line's Spring Steam Gala. It it's closed for troop trains, you'd have thought they would have chosen somewhere else locally! Or if resurfacing, try a different weekend.

The SWR "Plan My Journey" page also says there will be amended services, see quote below. Is this also related to the topic in this thread?

Services will be revised for operational reasons on Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 May.

The following services will not run on Tuesday 2 May:

  • 1908 Portsmouth & Southsea to London Waterloo
  • 1924 Basingstoke to London Waterloo
  • 2024 Basingstoke to London Waterloo
  • 1853, 1953, 2053, 2153, 2253 Guilford to Farnham
  • 1804, 1904, 2004, 2104, 2204 Farnham to Guildford
  • 1730, 1839, 1939, 2030, 2130, 2230 Aldershot to Ascot
  • 1819, 1919, 2023, 2123, 2223, 2323 Ascot to Aldershot

The following services will be altered on Tuesday 2 May:

  • 1802 Bournemouth to Basingstoke will terminate at Winchester
  • 1732 Waterloo to Guildford will be diverted to Basingstoke

The following services will not run on Wednesday 3 May:

  • 0543 Woking to London Waterloo
  • 0545 London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour
  • 0647 Fareham to Portsmouth Harbour

Please check before you travel using a journey planner.

Revised services on Saturday 6 May

For operational reasons there will be fewer trains between Alton and Guildford, Haslemere and Portsmouth, and Poole and Weymouth.

Some services will start and terminate at different stations or will not run.

Please plan your journey carefully and check before you travel using a journey planner.

Aldershot car park is now to remain open, but Farmborough car park will be closed entirely.

Went through Farnborough this morning, no obvious sign about the complete closure tomorrow, not on their twitter feed either.
As the station has 1000 parking spaces Tuesday is likely to be chaos.

Called the SWR helpline and they said it was maintenance work - might be a cover story

Drove past an hour ago. Still barriered off , but has a nice shiny new surface, with white lining.

Premium car park entrance also blocked at 1045 today, with two police vans parked up. No doubt helping with the maintenance ;)
So not only can no one park, there's no legal access for private vehicles to reach the pick up/drop off point or short term waiting spaces.
Working out a contingency plan to get my wife to and from the station for the rest of the week.
The whole surrounding area is going to be grid-locked when added to nearby roadworks and the next alternative route under the railway long-term closed for the SLP pipeline works.

The police vans were there when I dropped my husband off at 6.30 this morning. I have no idea what is going to happen when I have to pick him up at 6 this evening as it is always heaving as it is and with no pick up points it's going to be gridlocked.
