SWR car lengths

Been increasingly noticing that some services out of Waterloo after peak times/away from peak time traffic is running with reduced coaches. Why is this? For instance, the Alton 450s are now 4 cars as opposed to the usual 8/10. I haven't got on a 444 (1000 from Clapham Junction used to always be a 444 for example) either.
