Many thanks - 5712 + 5717 looked good to go going past W’don depot just now - didn’t expect to see 3 455-formed trains on the journey home as late as 22 Jan 2026!

I think 5721 has a faulty or missing pickup shoe at the coupled end. Every time the other end meets a gap, there is a huge flash, the motors cut out and the lights go dim. Still keeping time though.

EDIT: next round trip cancelled. Hopefully an easy repair.

None of the six retained units are showing on RTT at the moment, but do keep checking regularly through the day as there's always the possibility of a pair needing to be scrambled if something else fails.

Would guess it will continue to be fairly frequent until another 701 enters passenger service. Operational constraints (crew knowledge, stock balancing etc) restrict what diagrams can run as 455s and 701s can handle more passengers narrowing down the preferred 455 diagrams further.

Currently SWR need 34 701s out in service from 36 which gives very little wriggle room. The 455s won't be needed to the same extent once there's more 701s to cover.

Always when I'm working at the weekend, they end up on the Hampton Court/Dorking circuit...had all of last weekend off and they didn't make it out...might see if they're about in the week for the final final final trip on the old girls.

That plaque that refers to them running from 1983 to 2025 is already out of date, as a handful are still running this year.

I'm sure I rode my first one in 1982, on Saturday November 6th, which would make the start year inaccurate too.
