Travellers in that train had to sit 1 hour before the could leave the train. Imagine that you were sitting in that leaning carriage!

Oh dear, what SBB had been fearing for some time as the ETRs 610s don't apparently, like the Swiss point work that much...the maintenance of the train will need to be looked...

That it indeed is. Notably very little body distortion - clearly as strongly built as the UK ones.
Obviously the Swiss are more disciplined, I'd have expected people in the sideways coach to pull the egress - that assumes the doors on those don't just work on the UIC system in which case they'd be released anyway once the train went under 5km/h (I've travelled on them but I can't remember).

Luzern is closed until at least start of service on Friday. It doesn't help that the train brought some of the knitting down so the whole station is without power.
It could have been a lot worse. One of the photos on the report on the Tagi shows an incoming IR on an adjacent line. As Swiss drivers tend to be a bit old-school on their approach to stations (they tend to come in fast) if it had derailed a few seconds later it could have been very nasty indeed.

Are the Trenitalia ETR 610 Pendolino's the exact same variant as the class 390s?

No, it's a significantly updated design.
But it will have some of the basic 390 characteristics.
I imagine the bodyshell will be very similar (but 26m long).
Apart from the same window profile, it probably has the same naff table lights as well...

They are quite nice in 1st (don't *think* they have the table lamps) but in 2nd they are awful. A very narrow seat is used (SBB's bad habit again) and the seat back is very poorly designed and so minimises legroom.

An ETR610 derailed, I seem to recall, a few years ago on a curved, facing point on the Gotthard route which led to debate about the adequacy of maintenance (of the train and the track), ie. the axle was able to catch the end of the switch for the diverging route and hence move away from the direction of travel.

I have just registered to comment on this thread, as I live in Luzern and can maybe provide some updates. I am not a rail expert, so please excuse any incorrect terminology
According to the free newspaper that I read on the train yesterday morning, two overhead portals were taken out by the train, and a total of 400 metres of track and two sets of points need to be replaced. The station was initially supposed to reopen this morning, now it looks like it will be Monday morning. Part of the damaged train is currently sitting at platform 7 in the station, behind a black plastic screen.
The organisation of the replacement services has been truly excellent, and this starting from right after the incident. Trains are terminating at the last station before Luzern (Ebikon, Emmenbrücke or Verkehrshaus depending on where they are coming from), with replacement buses waiting for them. I think I read that the local bus companies have made something like 70 extra buses available, and have brought some drivers out of early retirement to make up numbers. To and from these temporary terminus stations, trains are running according to the normal timetable.
For those who know Luzern, the replacement buses are leaving from in front of the KKL concert hall just beside the station. Given the number of foreign tourists who visit Luzern (particularly Chinese and Japanese), the smooth organisation and the presence of lots of English-speaking staff has been very important.
My 20-minute commute is taking about 10 minutes longer than usual, which in the circumstances is really good.

Looking at the SBB app this morning it looks as though services are running into Luzern again.

There were quite a lot of people watching the repair work yesterday - it was easily visible from the first bridge outside the station, under which the train derailed. It looks like quite a lot of track was replaced over a distance of about 150 metres, between the end of the platforms and the bridge. Not just one line either, there are visibly new rails on three or four adjacent lines, which would explain the 400 metres of track replacement mentioned in the paper the other day.

My admiration for Swiss management. The planned closure for engineering in Wuppertal/Germany will go less smooth I fear.
I am not sure whether both things can be compared. This in Luzern was an accident. If you google you will find that between Gruiten and Wuppertal on 13 kilometers of track 387 lightsignals will be replaced, 98 switches will be connected to the new securitysystem and 374 kilometers of wires will be layed.

Lucerne managed a good replacement service in an emergency. Wuppertal is a planned closure and despite that past experiences have not been good.

DB in my experience don't do passenger information in the event of bustitution particularly well at all. SBB are not perfect, but it does work.
Google and you see that Luzern has a close connection with chocolate.
