Swinton (Manchester) station work

Currently there's a temporary platform on the down line on the original previously neglected part of the platform. The part under the awning is fenced off. Does anyone know what's being done?

Something similar is happening at Walkden where they have extended the platform with a temporary platform at the Manchester end of the station. This is happening so that the can relay the platform flooring so I suspect the same thing might be happening at Swinton.

I am pleased to see any station infrastructural improvements on this line. I remember how matters used to be over 50 years ago, when this line was not just the backwater that it finds itself to be these days.

Does anyone remember how useful this station was for the former Rugby League ground in those days of yore ?

Seems strange considering all the island platforms where done up in the last few years. When I initially saw the work I was hoping they where extending the platforms to accommodate six carriages sadly this doesn't seem to be the case.

Well at Walkden they lengthened the platform and only re-did half the platform flooring and introduced longer trains.....they have now realised their error so have had to erect a temporary extension to the platform to accommodate the longer trains so they can do the other half of the platform...I'm not sure whether that is the same situation at Swinton though.

No error - the platforms were virtually completely non-compliant for stepping (you needed a ladder at Walkden), so the new extension was built as correct as possible and now the original section is being corrected. They will be 6-car when completed.

Would the platform heights as originally constructed have been influenced by the types of Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway passenger carriage design appertaining when this through route from Windsor Bridge Junction to Crow Nest Junction that avoided Bolton was constructed ?

More likely that the track has done its usual "levitation trick" over the years, whereas the platforms have not ...

does anyone know if the Orrell platform wigan bound is going to be extended? they only extended it kirkby bound which seems shortsighted.

this was done just after swinton last time so i didn't start a new topic on it sorry if off topic.
