I can get an off peak single to Penzance £46, break my journey at St. Erth & buy a return from there to St Ives. Except for an advance is there a cheaper way to do this journey. I want to get the direct 8.27am train to St. Ives & then travel to Penzance in the early evening.

May not be relevant but I find that for most journeys to and from Cornwall a £10 Ride Cornwall ticket saves money. It includes bus travel too.

Valid from Plymouth and can be purchased on westbound trains from London or Bristol so no need to alight and all trains stop at Plymouth.

Hayle-St Ives is £3.50 return which saves you 50p over St Erth-St Ives.

Alternatively, Swindon-Plymouth @ £39.50 plus a £10 Ride Cornwall ticket comes to the same price; this has the benefit of unlimited bus and train travel in Cornwall - bus often being more convenient for St Ives - Penzance.

(snap!)
