As a Yank fascinated with British railways (note small r), Swindon has always fascinated me, especially the Works. I've been visiting since the late '70's, through closure, and 'renewal' of the '80's-'90's, when destruction reigned. It seems a whole culture and community has...disappeared? Wow, are there those about with memories of the way it was? For example; summer Trip for Works families? Is all this forgotten? If so, how sad. Semaphore Sam

There are numerous books written about the Great Western Railway both before and after nationalisation. (The "Western Region" of British Railways was the region closest to one of the pre-nationalisation companies, and as a result seems to have maintained much of its traditions.) So Swindon works and its people are well-recorded for posterity.
