Swiftcard Pay As You Go is now accepted for single, return and day nBus tickets on most bus operators in the West Midands. The notable exceptions are National Express (who have a seperate e-Daysaver Swiftcard), and Stagecoach.

If you have a Pay As You Go card, just tell the driver which ticket you'd like, and wait for your ticket to finish printing.

You still get a paper ticket! Not very smart for a smartcard!

You shouldnt... that's a programming error almost certainly

You also get one with an ENTCS card - I wonder if they're treated similarly. My printed ticket correctly says "MCard" on it - I've had them over several months last year and this, but it's a few months since it's been worth having an MCard for a week as I spend a lot of time out of West Yorkshire and have to get back to Leeds in a reasonable time to find anywhere that can sell one - latest I've found anywhere selling them is about 2100 despite the claims of the PayZone website - even the specific times I've raised with them have not been corrected.

That used to be common, and the reason was to stop drivers on smaller companies hitting "pass" repeatedly to gain extra revenue as it'd be obvious if they did. Obviously that's now been resolved in a different way by the card needing to be presented.

Swift PAYG accepted on NX Coventry buses as of today.
Can't be long then before it's on NX West Midlands.
