Swedish rail centres and depots

I wonder if anyone could advise me what's out here I've found Hallsburg and Malmo, and Gothenburg and Stockholm railway stations anywhere else that may be of interest, the railway museum is closed at the moment.

It depends what you want. If it is just as many trains as possible then you can try my old stamping ground of Borlänge (or Avesta-Krylbo), Kil or Nässjö. However, most of my experience is from over twenty-five tears ago; additionally, Swedish industry will only just be getting going after the summer break.

Thank you, saw plenty of freight through Hallsburg a few days ago and also Stockholm Central

I'm not entirely sure what you are looking for but Hallsberg is probably the biggest rail yard in Sweden. Other large ones for freight trains are Malmö, Gothenburg and Borlänge.

North of Stockholm city centre, SJ's largest depot is at Solna, just north and north-west of Solna station. You can view some it from the Ritorp Bridge near the Friends Arena.

If you make it to Umeå (and why wouldn't everyone want to?¿!) you will find the small combined yard for SJ and Norrtåg west of Umeå in Västerslätt. There is also a relatively busy rail-road container facility there.

There were quite a few different things in the yard at Malmö when I went past a few months ago. Mostly Swedish locomotives, but I think there were a few German ones as well. You can get a reasonable view from the train on the way past.

That's all I can say on this topic, I've not been anywhere else in Sweden with so much interesting stuff!

The German locos were probably DB Cargo Scandinavia Class EG or 185.2. The former were originally bought by DSB.

That does sound about right. Unfortunately I don't have my notes to hand at the moment to check...

Malmö is a big freight yard, here is an example of what you might see there. Filmed just south of the freighyard.

Gothenburg also attracts a lot of freight as it is port city (largest port in Scandinavia I think).

Just outside Umeå, Vännäs is a good place for freight trains. And then there is always Malmbanan and the ore trains.

Good suggestion. From 12-18 September the Botniaban (Umeå - Örnsköldsvik) is closed for engineering work, so Vännäs will see three northbound and three southbound night trains once again. For reasons I don’t quite understand, when this happens SJ cancel the “X3000” / X55 daytime trains to/from Umeå. Maybe they’re not cleared for the old main line via Melansel, or perhaps it’s not viable to staff the trains.

Yes they have some investing shutters at zMalmp but also an pld zNo

I got out to the depot, thank you I found a few locations on the bridges and shopping centre to manage s few phographs I was amazed at how large it was, and how many locos were on shed

Yes Malmo was amazing some interesting shaped shunters on shed plus a Nohab outside.
