Swaythling to Leicester

I'd like to travel from Swaythling to Leicester on Sat 12 March returning on Sun 13 March. To arrive by about 6-7pm and return early afternoon. Have a young persons railcard.

Open return direct is £51.60. Cheapest split I can find is at Bedford for a total £46.70.

Can anyone beat that?

Why split when there are through advance singles that are cheaper?? Roughly £19 each way - maybe less if you are flexible on times.

Because on the return journey there only seem to be advance for early morning or late night services - I can't find any during the day.

Well either I checked the wrong date or they've disappeared in the last couple of hours - or were a glitch. Apologies if I misled you.

Try splitting at Market Harborough or Kettering. EMT is currently offering ridiculously cheap AP fares to these stations compared to Leicester. Buy from EMT website saves a further 65p/70p (with Y-P discount).

There are some good £11-13 fares available. Market Harborough -Leicester Off-Peak Return Y-P costs £8.60. From Kettering it is £10.75.

OK. I missed the bit about the returning times.

How about this:

Swaythling (12.43) - Market Harborough (16.11)
Advance Y-P £11.20 (Booked on EMT website)

Rugby - Market Harborough Route Nuneaton
Off-Peak Return Y-P £8.45

Nuneaton (15.11) - Swaythling (20.01)
Advance Y-P £17.80 (Might be cheaper booked with crosscountrytrains.co.uk but I have not checked.) The same trains two hours later are the same price.

This gives you a total of £37.45

You must buy the Rugby ticket in this direction as you will only be using the return portion, breaking your journey at Leicester on the Saturday and carrying on on Sunday, again breaking your journey at Nuneaton. This totals, interestingly, less than the two Day Singles that you would otherwise require.
