Swanage Railway

Hi all,

Im going camping in Dorset in a couple of weeks and just by chance whilst investigating the area found out the site is near the Swanage Railway. Anyone been before, if so whats it like. I am particulary excited as I see that the start evening services from the 16th May which is when I get there

You've struck lucky with your arrival date. On Saturday 16th 45060 will be working all the trains marked as Diesel on the timetable which includes all the evening trains and on Sunday 17th 31108 will operate all the Diesel trains. The railway is running a Green Timetable this weekend. see www.swanagerailway.co.uk

It's well worth a visit - very pleasant line, nice trains and friendly atmosphere.

It's a gorgeous line - especially between Norden & Harmans Cross, with perhaps the 'textbook' southern country station at Corfe Castle.

If the M7 hasn't had its repaint yet, it looks fantastic when coupled to a couple fo BR green Mk1s!

30053 has had her repaint since im a member of the youth group i was one of the first to know,she was at Eastleigh today she is in unlined black with southern written on both side tanks and 53 on both sides of the bunker,and 53 on the buffer beams There are photos on the repaint on the website

Ooh, beautiful!

I did like her in BR black, especially slightly worn - made for great photos...

IMO i Really don't think steam has much of place on my line due to the 1960's theme as much as i like steam and all,we here at the Swanage railway have these cromptons sitting about doing nothing most of the time and the 108 hybrid only working the green timetable and evenings sirvices plus the 117
i think we should have at least one diesel working evry sirvice day

Well, though it's not my line I must diagree! It's a fantastic steam line, and the late-BR scene can be recreated perfectly with rebuilt 'light pacifics' the standard 4 tanks and the 'M7'. It's the perfect line for all of those engines! I mean, the view of the line from Corfe Castle was built for photos of steam trains!

I respect your opnion but mine and quite a few other volenteers here disagree
there should be at least one Diesel working a day next year we where thinking of scrapping the steam gala just for 2010 and doing a 1960s gala we havn't decided yet through but i agree steam does look good on the line but you just can't beat a good old crompton

Don't worry its not been confrimed yet but if it is going to happen there will be loads of steamers but a lot of Diesels aswell

Can you believe this - I have lived in Dorset almost all of my life and never been on the Swanage Railway. That is all going to change on Sunday when my wife (she has been before at least five times!) and I are going to do the whole journey, do some Geocaching at each station and soak up the atmosphere - can't wait. Will report my thoughts after.

My trip with my wife to Swanage Railway was even better than I could have wished for. The sun shone all day, we took dozens of photos with our new camera and found a clutch of Geocaches to boot. A bit sad that "Manston" wasn't there but no doubt the boys at Eastleigh will have her up and running soon. We shall be visiting again soon with my parents - they have never been before and one of Mums' friends husband worked on Swanage some years ago, so whether he still does I don't know. His name is Ron Corelli - who knows.
