reports of a car colliding with Swanage railway bridge at Stoborough causing traffic disruption and closure of the line until damage can be assessed in Bournemouth echo

A WOMAN has suffered life-changing injuries after her car collided with a railway bridge.

The collision happened on Grange Road, near Stoborough, at around 12.10pm on Saturday.

The road remained closed throughout the afternoon and Swanage Railway services over the bridge were being suspended.

Acting Sgt Lee Savage of Dorset Police said a woman in her 50s, from the Poole area, had been driving the black Alfa Romeo Mito when it was in collision with Swanage Railway’s bridge.

She was taken by Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance to Southampton General Hospital, suffering from multiple injuries, which were initially thought to be life-threatening.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said at 5.30pm on Saturday night that the victim's injuries were now life-changing.

The collision also damaged the bridge, which was closed to trains until the damage could be assessed.

One train was expected to cross the bridge at walking speed later this afternoon.

Dorset Fire and Rescue said it was called at 12.20pm.

It added: “A crew from Wareham and Poole attended and on arrival made the vehicle safe and assisted the ambulance crew to carry the patient to the air ambulance, which had landed in a nearby field.”

I wondered why the 159 went so slow after Norden (although still arrived into Wareham 10 minutes ahead of schedule)

Understand this is on the section between Norden and Wareham, so normal Swanage Railway services are not affected.

The road looks straight so it is difficult to see how the collision could have occurred in normal circumstances. One assumes there was an unexpected such as a blow out, car coming the other way, or something running into the road. Typically but by no means always it looks as if driver error might be involved. The road looks straight and problem free, I'm sure I've been down it in times past even on foot. sometimes that leads to complacency.

Regardless the Police say the woman has life changing injuries, and I hope she is able to rise to overcome any disability she may now have.

Hopefully the bridge is not damaged seriously and it does not affect the Swanage link to the main line or any furzebrook rail traffic.
