Supermarket Convenience Store Bakeries

Anyone else a fan?


Sainsbury's local is my favourite...

With many near train stations I may sometimes too often find myself popping in for something while out and about or on the way home Bagel and Giraffe roll are the favourites for me!
I noticed the range in the one on Colmore Row by Snow Hill station has had it's range changed this week - now including mini pizza breads and few new sweet treats (albeit with the Giraffe roles gone)! Has anyone else's local changed this week?
I find it quite funny (and occasionally disappointing) how the bakery in local's have a much larger range of individual bake-off bakery items than that of the big Sainsburys supermarkets! Does anyone have any ideas on why this might be?


Never seem to find Tesco Express stock much? Does anyone know if any other supermarket connivence stores have good bakeries?

Lidl always has a good range of reasonably inexpensive bakery goods. Not really a convenience store but they are nonetheless in many town/city centres now.

That reminds me of when I went to Germany a few years back, Aldi had a delicious bakery section there! Always thought it's a shame they didn't bring that here

Most supermarkets in Germany do. A few UK Aldi stores do have a fresh bakery section similar to their German counterparts (the one in Manchester centre, for example) but most of them don't.

The Sainsburys Local serve the lunch market and people visiting and working in the city centre. They usually have a bigger selection of sandwiches. My local big Sainsburys has a small selection of sandwiches and soft drinks.

For on-the-go food, people are more likely to pop into a convenience store on the high street than head out to a large supermarket. It's as simple as that really.

Most supermarkets in Germany do.

A slight nuance - most (many?) supermarkets in Germany have a separate concession to an independent bakery. I believe an outlet can only call itself a “bakery / baker’s” if it actually does so on the premises - and it may be even more stringent than that. (In Germany, I mean)

Quite often there is both an indepedent concession and also the usual racks of self service with the main supermarket itself.

As I understand it under German law, only somewhere selling freshly baked goods can call themselves a Bäckerei, which doesn't fit well with a nationwide warehouse based logistics operation. It doesn't have to be on the spot, but in practical terms it needs to be close enough to be delivered fresh every morning. The majority of independent kiosks and small "bakeries" in Germany have their goods arrive frozen and heat up them as needed, same as the supermarkets. If you look closely you'll see they always describe themselves as Backshops but never a Bäckerei.
In some cases a small shop will actually bake on premises from scratch and proudly display the legally required certificate of their master baker on the wall. However this model is mostly literally dying out, as few young people want to spend their lives doing backbreaking work starting a 2AM 6 days a week for minimal financial reward.

I agree with the comments on Lidl, the bakery is an excellent feature of their stores.

For an occasional treat, though this is stating the obvious. M&S bakery is definitely worth it.

The softbake cookies, Doughnut boxes, and muffins. Absolutely delicious.

I think the only supermarket bakeries I wasn't overenthusiastic about are probably Sainsbury's. Might be bad luck but I have found some of their items such as soft cookies a bit dry. Greggs has the same problem with their soft cookies; however, everything else is very good, and the cherry bakewell muffin is certainly also a good new addition.

I’m not a huge fan of supermarket bakeries. I tend to find the products quite low quality and unsatisfying. I’ve stopped buying bakery goods at them now, and instead just have them as a treat every now and then from independent bakeries. Usually a lot more expensive, but quality often much better.
M&S is rather good though. However I’m really not keen on how they leave their products out in the open, where kids may touch them, people may sneeze all over them. Yuk. I’m not sure if all their bakeries are like that.

Lidl is also rather good. However they closed the Canterbury branch so I can’t get to one easily now. I always went for a pretzel to remind me of continental trips!
