Hello All,

Some guidance, please - I have booked a train ticket from NMP to EUS on Tuesday 26th May, departing at 7.19am and returning at 5.19pm.

In my haste, I hadn't realised that, for some bizarre reason, the London Northwestern Railway website have booked me a Super Off-Peak Day Return ticket, even though these are obviously peak time services.

It was significantly cheaper, £31.80, for these tickets but I am now worried that I may face issues the barrier, and even worse a penalty fare if I get an inspector on board the train.

I have checked again, and Super-Off Peak tickets are showing on this route, on this day, for the entire day and the same on Trainline too.

Question is, can I travel with these tickets or am I likely to have issues? - I've taken screenshots of the date, times and ticket options available, and my purchased tickets are in my app with the times, but I'm concerned. I'm in a regulated profession and a penalty fare would not go down well, but equally I have bought these tickets fair and square.

Thanks in advance.

As you can see on this screenshot from brfares.com the TOC has not applied this restriction to 26th May. Probably a mistake, but should not really be your problem. They will probably "fix" it before the date, and you might find issues on the day - but this is not your issue

This will be because they carried forward the bank holiday date from last year.

Your ticket is always valid on its itinerary. Looks like the ticket data was messed up and the 26th was not included in the restrictions (the 25th is a bank holiday)

Many thanks for your reply.

When you say 'issues on the day', does this mean non-entry at the barriers and/or a penalty fare on the train?

Obviously if they don't let me through the barriers at all, even after an explanation then the second point won't be an issue but getting to work will be.

You will have a valid itinerary and ticket but some staff might think otherwise. The gates are programmed separately so they will might not let you through.

Thank you again.

I suppose I'm trying to confirm if my tickets are valid for travel?
And/or if I might be at risk of a penalty fare.
They are valid, and you should not be refused travel, or charged any sort of additional fare.

However, not all staff on the railway behave appropriately at all times, so there is a possibility you will be wrongly denied travel or otherwise mistreated.

A good retailer would back you up; in this case the retailer is the same as the company you are travelling with (West Midlands Trains).

I know of numerous incidents where train companies have denied passengers who booked with the forum ticketing site. Our supplier (Raileasy) will always back people up in such situations, if required.

Looks like they've excluded Tuesday 26th August, too (and not the Bank Holiday on the 31st).

Thank you, that's very reassuring to know.

Hopefully I won't have any issues.

I doubt that screenshots of what might have been available at a particular time would hold much weight. What is important is the itinerary associated with the ticket that was actually bought.

I would strongly advise you to print a pdf of the itinerary issued with your ticket (or a screenshot provided the ticket and itinerary all fits on a single screen), to use as evidence of the itinerary associated with the ticket you actually bought. I personally wouldn't rely on the information still being available in the app at a later date.
