Super Off Peak Return Edinburgh-Brighton

Hi, This is my first post although I have been viewing for some months.
I have a super off peak return from Edinburgh to Brighton for 11th March with a Senior Railcard. The ticket is “any permitted” with a validity code 72. ( BR Fares suggest the restriction is 1K) It also has the cross for cross London tube etc. I have done a lot of research on the forums and think that the following is OK
Edinburgh-Kings Cross 09 30 arrrive 13.50. The suggested itinerary from there is tube to Victoria and then from Victoria to Brighton at 14.36. However I might go FCC from St Pancras direct to Brighton. This seems to be OK
I have some questions about my return though.
It seems that any train from Brighton in the morning to London is OK as the restrictions apply to departures from London Stations. Is that OK? Furthermore there are Network restrictions on Senior Railcards in the morning peak. I think this is OK too, because the destination is outwith the Network Area
On Wednesday 13th I am thinking of taking the 14.40 Virgin Trains to Edinburgh and having a night at Crewe and then Carlisle. Is my ticket valid on this? I think it is
The alternative is the locohauled Chiltern from Marylebone at 13.15 To Snow Hill (I think this is the locohauled one from the Chiltern timetable) walk to New Street and then get the 1440 from Euston as far as Crewe. Again is this a valid routing? What time restrictions are there from Crewe on my ticket, and also what are they from Carlisle On Friday 15th?
Finally are there all-night waiting rooms at Crewe and Carlisle?

AFAIAA there are no 24 hour facilities at Carlisle. At one time the station used to be open 24 hours per day, but the last time I was there on a Sunday morning the station was closed until the first train was due to leave.

Yes, it's valid via those routes.

Yes, it's only restricted on the Edinburgh <> London portion of the journey, and is completely unrestricted on the London <> Brighton portion of the journey.

Break of journey is always permitted on the return portion of a (Super) Off Peak ticket.

Technically you are not allowed to get a train from Crewe - Carlisle or Carlisle - Edinburgh that has "departed Euston" before 0905, but other than that, any train is fine for those legs of your journey.

Information for Crewe & Carlisle stations is here: [stn]CRE[/stn] and [stn]CAR[/stn], which confirm they are staffed 24 hours but waiting room opening times are not given. But someone here will know...!

Thanks for the quick reply. I might take a Cheshire ranger day ticket from Crewe ending at Manchester Piccadilly and go to Carlisle and then Edinburgh that way.

Just so you don't accidentally get the wrong train...
The 1440 is a direct Manchester Piccadilly service, via the Trent Valley Line (avoiding Birmingham) with first stop Crewe.
The 1443 is a Birmingham service extended into a Birmingham - Edinburgh (@1620) service and it also calls at Crewe. It will take almost an hour longer than the 1440.

You can travel Marylebone - Birmingham - Crewe - Manchester - Carlisle - Edinburgh over one or several days on the return portion of a BTN - [stn]EDB[/stn] ticket.

Technically speaking you could do quite the grand tour, e.g., Manchester - Carlisle via Preston, then Carlisle - Leeds via Hellifield/Settle, then Leeds - Edinburgh via York and Newcastle.

I'd stick with the suggested route and get the Victoria Line to Victoria. The time allowed is very generous and you are quite likely to be able to get an earlier train south.
There are also higher frequencies on both the tube and from Victoria. If there is no Brighton fast service shown get the first service to haywards heath and change there.
The FCC service south from St pancras is okay but the stopping pattern means that effectively there are only 2 services per hour to Brighton . Its also quite slow on the cross London section.

Seems a bit strange, almost going backwards especially as Hexham to Newcastle and on to Edinburgh is not permitted.

As long as you don't doubleback on yourself (pass through the same station twice) you are free to take any traceable route.
