London Edinburgh return via Glasgow to London, return part of super off peak ticketThursday last ( £108 ) I missed the cross country 0726 from Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Central (cross country XC) and so took the 0815 to Glasgow Queen Street. Was my ticket valid on the First Scotrail service, or must I wait for off peak period for that service? Ticket previously accepted by XC and EC at this time of the morning. Return journey via West Coast at a later date.

You want to know the restrictions on a return portion of a London to Edinburgh Super Off Peak Return? This is routed Any Permitted, so equally valid via Glasgow or via Newcaste.

The restriction is:
Return travel - by any train
scheduled to ARRIVE at or
after:

London Terminals (except as
shown below) 1117

London Liverpool Street:_1000

London St Pancras: 1129

London Euston: 1005. Also
valid on all First ScotRail
Caledonian sleepers (with
supplement)

Stevenage: 1100

Luton: 1129

Luton Airport Parkway: 1129

Bedford: 1129

Watford Junction: 1020. Also
valid on all First ScotRail
Caledonian sleepers (with
supplement)

Milton Keynes Central: 1020.
Also valid on all First
ScotRail Calendonian sleepers
(with supplement)
What this effectively means is that if you are going via Glasgow to Euston, the only train you cannot get is the 0426 from Glasgow Central to Euston. Any other train is fine.

Obviously you missed the 0426 by several hours anyway.

Did the conductor accept the ticket? They certainly should have! If they had any doubts then they should look it up.

Definition of the phrase "super off peak restrictions" ?

Answer is "confusing".

Don't worry that you don't understand the rules. Neither do 99.9% of the country either.

With the rules varying both by train company and by destination, the percentage chance that these rules will ever be understand by the general pubic is ----

Yes, you guessed it ----- absolutely 0%

Welcome to the railway system of Britain.

thanks to both poster, the first confirmed what I thought, the second predicted the understandable confusion of the very friendly train guard who undertook research and used her discretion, such that we could both find the answer another time. Well done to all. Many thanks.

All the guard has to do is enter the origin and destination, and select the ticket type and their machine should tell them the restriction.

I know it's not easy for the general public to find out and PhilipW's post is entirely valid, but surely a guard should easily be able to find this out?

Or was her machine not working, in which case she has little choice but to accept all tickets and advise anyone without a ticket to buy at their destination?

The general public are not allowed to see a list of the restrictions without paying £9+VAT+P&P for a CD containing about 15MB of data in the form of the Avantix Traveller NFM software. Instead, we are supposed to ask staff for the restriction (they are meant to tell us when we buy our tickets but some are so long that never happens). Or you can ask here! ;) Or, alternatively, it is available on file sharing websites for nothing. We don't permit such links to file sharing sites however it can be ordered legally from TSO.

The naughty site seems to have had its account suspended, so back to the TSO for those that don’t believe in paying for public information. :(
